The Miami Heat successfully snapped a three-game losing streak on Tuesday night against the Phoenix Suns, with a final score of 127-121. Bam Adebayo led the charge with 29 points, including four three-pointers made, nine rebounds, four assists, two steals, and a block in 32 minutes. The three-time All-Star has experienced a series of shooting slumps throughout the regular season, but may have found a breakout moment.
It's worth noting he officially passed former Heat star and 2006 champion Alonzo Mourning for second in all-time points in franchise history, 9,461 and counting. Adebayo is 12,095 points shy of the record, which Heat icon Dwyane Wade holds with 21,556.
There is still a long way to go for the Heat to get back among the best in the Eastern Conference. They currently sit with a 21-19 record, eighth in the standings, and are preparing to face the Boston Celtics on Thursday. However, it's going to be different compared to recent experience as superstar Jayson Tatum remains sidelined, recovering from a torn Achilles, which was sustained on May 12th, 2025, in game five in the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Knicks.
Adebayo shares a deep connection with the five-time All-NBA forward, having played against one another since their youth. They were drafted in the same class, 2017, 11 selections apart. However, Thursday will mark the second time that Tatum misses a matchup against the Heat since Jan. 28th, 2020.
Both organizations are in different places compared to the last playoff match-up in 2024. Adebayo alluded to his connection with Tatum and confirmed that he checked up on him after the initial injury.
"Outside of basketball, that's my brother," he said. "I always talk about how a lot of guys I was drafted with, we've known each other since we were 12 [years old]. Growing up and watching each other pave this way in our careers, obviously, you're going to check up on somebody like that. Good to see him healthy and getting back on the court."
There have been rumors and speculation about whether or not Tatum will make a historic recovery and play this season. It's been reported that the 2024 champion believes he will, without an actual timeline. However, Adebayo doesn't want to see Tatum rush his recovery.
"Me talking as a brother, I wouldn't want him to play," he added. "Don't rush it. I wouldn't want to see him back yet, so he can have a full recovery."
Adebayo and Tatum have competed against each other in the Eastern Conference three times. The competitiveness remains strong between them, but so does the love, respect, and brotherhood created throughout the years.
