As the Miami Heat prepare to face the Indiana Pacers tonight, the trade deadline is less than a month away. The first blockbuster deal of the season already occurred, with four-time All-Star Trae Young getting shipped to the Washington Wizards in exchange for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert. It came as a surprise when the Atlanta Hawks didn't acquire any draft capital, but that's the reality.
The biggest star rumored to be moved was Giannis Antetokounmpo. However, the former Finals MVP recently stated that he had no intentions of requesting a trade anytime soon. The 31-year-old has been a dream target for the Heat for years, but business must shift towards a different direction.
It was reported on Friday, Jan 9th, that the Memphis Grizzlies are "entertaining offers" for two-time All-Star Ja Morant. If the 26-year-old guard were to be dealt before the deadline, it would mark the end of his seven-year tenure with the organization. He's currently averaging 19 points, 3.2 rebounds, 7.6 assists, and a steal, while shooting 40.1 percent from the field and a horrendous 20.8 percent from behind the arc, in 18 games thus far.
There have been speculations at the start of the season about Morant potentially wanting out of the Grizzlies, especially with the lack of continuity with Tumos Iisalo. The Heat have been linked as a "team to watch," with reports indicating that the organization has held internal discussions about a potential deal. They could acquire the former All-NBA guard, matching his $39.45 million salary with All-Star guard Tyler Herro's $31 million salary.
However, there could be concerns about Morant's legitimate fit within the "Heat Culture." He has gotten into trouble in the past with social media. Time has passed since then, which could result in the front office giving him the benefit of the doubt.
There's no denying Morant's talents, especially with his athleticism, but it's a matter of his ability to buy into Erik Spoelstra's system. The Heat have limited options for star hunting, as there doesn't appear to be much buzz about the upcoming trade deadline. Morant might be the best available and they have the salaries to get a deal done.
Sometimes, a new environment is necessary for an athlete of any sport to rediscover themselves. The Milwaukee Bucks and Sacramento Kings are others listed as potential suitors. Neither has proven to be a legitimate contender this season.
The trade deadline is on Feb. 6th, at 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
