As the front office pursues a blockbuster trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo, veteran targets emerge as crucial pieces for the Miami Heat's depth.

Miami, Fla. – In the latest episode of the HeatWave Podcast, part of the Roundtable Sports Network, Miami Heat beat writer Anthony Aguirre named several unrestricted free agents for this upcoming summer who would make viable additions. Trading for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo is the front office’s main priority, but it is still important to fill the voids to contend in the Eastern Conference.

The Heat won’t have cap space, but the organization is nearly $41 million under the first apron, which will provide some flexibility in trades and free agency. Regardless of how the Antetokounmpo package ends up being, there should be enough resources available to sign free agents who could contribute to title contention.

Here are some names Aguirre mentioned in the episode:

Starting with eight-year veteran and former All-Defensive center Robert Williams III. He’s spent the previous three seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers–primarily sidelined because of injuries. Williams III only appeared in 85 total games with the Trail Blazers.

However, what would make the 28-year-old a strong addition to the Heat, as Aguirre thinks, is the elite rim protection he provides. Williams III would likely serve as a rotation bench player–signed close to the veteran minimum.

Next on the list is 11-year veteran and forward Kelly Oubre Jr. He’s spent the previous three seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers. Oubre Jr. averaged 14.1 points on 46.7 percent shooting, 36 percent from behind the arc, five rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.4 steals in 50 games, including 41 starts.

The 30-year-old is a versatile and “bulky” forward who can defend multiple positions, plus provide floor spacing.

Oubre Jr. was close to signing with the Heat a few summers ago when nine-time All-Star Damian Lillard requested a trade from the Blazers specifically to South Florida. However, a deal was never agreed upon; he was then traded to the Bucks, and Oubre Jr. signed with the Sixers.

Finally, Aguirre mentioned seven-year veteran and forward Dean Wade. He’s been with the Cleveland Cavaliers since entering the league in 2019 as an undrafted prospect. Wade doesn’t present the flashiest numbers, but he delivers a significant impact, especially on the defensive side of the court.

The 29-year-old averaged 5.8 points on 43.9 percent shooting, 36.2 percent from behind the arc, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.5 assists, playing in 59 games, including 38 starts.

Aguirre named other free agents, which you can find out by watching the latest HeatWave Podcast episode.
