After shipping away their young core for Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Miami Heat should pivot to the Nikola Jovic’s untapped potential as Erik Spoelstra attempts to transform a high-priced prospect into a star.
The Miami Heat's offseason seems just about wrapped up as we head toward the end of September. There is only one more roster spot that is eligible to be filled. However, the Heat still have a decent crop of young talent despite parting with a lot of pieces in the blockbuster Giannis Antetokounmpo deal earlier in the offseason. Miami sent Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kasparas Jakucionis for Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis. All of those players dealt to Milwaukee are 26-years-old or under. That leaves a couple of candidates on the roster in terms of players who can take a big leap but the strongest candidate may be the least expected.
Nikola Jovic, 23, is the Heat's strongest breakout candidate entering this season. Jovic, the team's first-round pick from 2022, signed a four-year rookie contract extension worth $62.4 million prior to last season. Pat Riley really liked what he had to offer for the foreseeable future. However, it seemed the team was already regretting that contract decision as Jovic was basically a non-factor down the stretch of the regular season, only appearing in eight games post-January.
While Jovic has been rather disappointing with his performance on the court, he is still quite young. Erik Spoelstra has done a great job over the years when it comes to developing young talent and while Jovic has yet to fully display the ability to perform well on the court, there is still plenty of potential and Spoelstra is one of the few coaches in the NBA to trust to unlock it.
There were plenty of opportunities for the Heat to move off Jovic's contract this offseason in a trade as there were multiple players around the league making a similar salary in trade discussions. However, the Heat have held firm and decided to keep the Serbian forward. With the amount of veterans coming into this new-look rotation, the Heat are probably smart to hold onto some younger talent.
The rotation is certainly crowded at the moment with all the veteran additions the front office made. With the Heat adding Portis as part of the trade for Antetokounmpo, there is already have a strong presence at the backup power forward spot. Jovic can also get some minutes at the small forward position although the team also brought back consistent three-point shooter Simone Fontecchio on a one-year contract.
Jovic has a lot of talent and shined throughout the FIBA Basketball World Cup European Qualifiers this summer. He played for Team Serbia and averaged 20 points in his four qualifying games played. Hopefully that is the start of a breakout and the Heat won't have to regret handing out that large contract prior to last season.
