The Miami Heat's early offseason fuels urgency. Could a proven champion like Kevin Durant, eyeing contention, finally land in South Florida this summer?
After missing the playoffs for the first time since 2019, the Miami Heat are likely desperate to make significant changes to return to contention status. Three-time All-Star Bam Adebayo is officially the face of the franchise with six-time All-Star Jimmy Butler gone since the Feb. 6, 2025, trade deadline. However, the lack of star power will need to be addressed this summer.
It’s widely known that the Heat are strongly interested in Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, who could realistically request a trade after an underwhelming 32-50 season, appearing in just 36 games. The 10-time All-Star might not be the only big name available on the market as the offseason approaches.
Two-time NBA Champion Kevin Durant could seek to depart from the Houston Rockets, despite joining the organization last summer in a blockbuster trade with the Phoenix Suns. He averaged 26 points on 52 percent shooting, 41.3 percent from three-point range, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists, appearing in 78 games.
Even at 37 years old, the future first ballot Hall of Famer is still looking to compete for another championship. The Rockets currently face a 0-3 deficit in the first round against the Los Angeles Lakers, despite neither Luka Doncic nor Austin Reaves playing a game due to injuries. Durant sat out twice due to a knee tendon bruise and left ankle sprain.
The Heat have been able to overcome the lack of talent on the roster in recent history, but despite having one of the fastest-paced and high-scoring offenses throughout the regular season, it proved not to be enough. The defense fell apart after the All-Star break, ranking 21st in the league.
Also, coach Erik Spoelstra admitted the backcourt combo of Tyler Herro and Norman Powell was difficult to figure out, especially with both missing significant time due to injuries, and hardly building any on-court chemistry.
Durant has been on the Heat’s bucket list since 2016, before the decision to join the Golden State Warriors.
As the Rockets face a 0-3 deficit, which no team in NBA history has ever come back from, rumors will likely speculate throughout the summer. The Heat would likely be included in any possible trade conversations. They will have multiple first-rounders to offer.
A superstar in South Florida is needed to increase the chances of bringing back a Larry O’Brien trophy for the first time since 2013. Durant would give the Heat a strong chance, but turning 38 years old before the start of next season could be viewed as the biggest deal breaker.
The front office doesn’t shy away from star hunting, but change is desperately needed.
