Fresh off signing with the Miami Heat, four-time champion Klay Thompson has sights on Duncan Robinson’s franchise mark.

MIAMI, Fla. – It’s been 10 days since the Miami Heat officially signed Klay Thompson to a reported two-year, $13 million contract and record-breaking discussions have already occurred.

Posted on the team’s YouTube channel on Wednesday was a recap of the 36-year-old’s introductory press conference, plus behind-the-scenes footage of him working out, walking into the locker room, and photoshoots. During all the action, Thompson asked an interesting question:

“What’s the Miami Heat single-season three-point makes record?”

The answer is from 2019-20, when former franchise shooter Duncan Robinson made 270, despite the year being cut short. At that point, the undrafted guard broke through, made a name for himself, and earned a reputation as one of the league’s most prolific three-point shooters.

Robinson is currently with the Detroit Pistons, ending a seven-year tenure in South Florida last summer.

Thompson is more than capable of chasing the franchise record. In the 2022-23 season, he led the league with 301 three-pointers made in 69 games (all starts), a year after returning from two severe injuries: torn ACL and Achilles tendon tears. Last season, Thompson made 202 shots from behind the arc, 22nd most in the league.

Despite experiencing a down year with the Dallas Mavericks, the 15-year veteran is looking to prove he can still impact winning.

Part of the reason the four-time NBA Champion decided to sign with the Heat was playing alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo. As they draw more attention in the paint and break down defenses, it should generate open looks for Thompson to knock down shots from behind the arc. Antetokounmpo has a similar gravitational pull as Steph Curry.

Thompson has the fourth-most three-pointers made in league history – 2,899 and counting. Unlike Ray Allen’s short tenure with the Heat, the five-time All-Star won’t have to sacrifice many shot attempts.

After selecting to forgo financial security to chase another championship, Thompson’s thirst for competition is still great. He was part of the Golden State Warriors’ Dynasty from 2014 to 2022 and won four Larry O’Brien Trophies. Thompson, Antetokounmpo, Bobby Portis Jr., and Andrew Wiggins combine for seven championship rings.

The Heat are among the favorites to win the Eastern Conference and return to the NBA Finals. Thompson’s elite shooting will play a significant role in the team’s success. The Heat’s training camp is approaching and championship aspirations surrounding the franchise haven’t been greater over the last six years.
