The Miami Heat's season has been a rocky one. The team's hot start seemed to be a fluke as the team will finish the season just barely above .500 and as the No. 10 seed in the Eastern Conference standings. A big reason for the great start was the strong play from recent offseason acquisition Norman Powell. The team traded Kevin Love and Kyle Anderson to acquire the guard from the Los Angeles Clippers in July. He earned his first All-Star nod this season but a recent ranking suggests he may be viewed as overrated around the league.
Bleacher Report released an article, naming the ten most overrated players in the NBA at the moment. Powell is ranked at No. 2 on the list behind Toronto Raptors forward Brandon Ingram.
"Like [Jaylen] Brown, Norman Powell is having an objectively good season," the article wrote. "He's averaging 21.9 points and shooting 38.3 percent from three. For a 90s shooting guard, those would be great numbers. But it's 2026, and All-Stars typically bring more well-rounded production to the table. Powell made his first appearance in that mid-season exhibition in February, but he's doing little to impact the game as a rebounder (3.6 per game) and playmaker (2.5 assists). And as a shoot-first guard who leads the team in points per game, you'd at least expect a positive impact on the attack. Powell isn't providing that. Somehow, the Heat score (slightly) fewer points per 100 possessions when he plays."
Powell had a strong season with the Clippers last year but not many expected him to continue the good stretch of play, especially when he was offloaded for cheap by Los Angeles in the offseason. He is an upcoming unrestricted free agent. Miami has plenty of decisions to make this offseason surrounding other contracts on the roster but with a good amount of money coming off the books, Powell's return is very possible. He will be entering his age-33 season in Oct. If the Heat are aggressive this offseason and part with Tyler Herro as part of a blockbuster-type deal for a player such as Giannis Antetokounmpo, then bringing back Powell could be a must despite the overrated tag.
