Led by stars Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, the Miami Heat’s revamped roster fast-tracked chemistry with player-led workouts, signaling a championship-first mentality before the season even tips off.
MIAMI, Fla. – The Miami Heat wasted no time in building chemistry, holding an unofficial team workout before training camp.
All of the standard roster and two-way signees were in attendance, including Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bam Adebayo, Nikola Jovic, Davion Mitchell, Klay Thompson, and Nick Richards, etc. Erik Spoelstra was not in the picture the team took together, but he must have been aware of it ahead of time and proud of what took place.
Usually, before reporting to training camp, players take advantage of the break they still have before returning to the basketball business. They will conduct workouts, but privately. Instead, the Heat’s roster made time to be together and get a head start on building chemistry. It’s an important factor for any championship contender.
The Heat added six new players to the standard roster, including Antetokounmpo, Bobby Portis Jr., Klay Thompson, Tim Hardaway Jr., and Nick Richards. Although it’s known what they can contribute individually, it’s more important to put the pieces together and operate as one unit, especially on the defensive side of the court.
It shows the level of maturity of this team to put together training time without needing a coach to do it for them. The Heat are veteran-heavy, including four players who have won at least one championship. They will still need to rely on a few young pieces, such as Nikola Jovic and Pelle Larsson. Both participated in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 European Qualifiers.
Jovic averaged 20 points on 66.7 percent shooting, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in four matches for Team Serbia. He will primarily be relied upon as a rebounder and defender, plus to provide some scoring. Meanwhile, Larsson ignited for Team Sweden. He averaged 26 points on 42.9 percent shooting, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists.
Larsson finished with back-to-back 31-point performances against Slovenia and Finland.
The Heat have championship-or-bust aspirations ahead of the upcoming season, but the habits start before and continue behind the scenes. Bringing four players who have firsthand experience in winning the Larry O’Brien trophy is critical and provides unique knowledge. The Heat are among the favorites to win the Eastern Conference, in competition against the Philadelphia 76ers, New York Knicks, and Boston Celtics, plus others.
As the players get a head start on the work, it should translate to training camp in the upcoming weeks. These are championship habits being built before the real test begins.
