Seeking to bolster a championship-ready rotation, Pat Riley could pivot from Nikola Jovic to acquire Indiana's explosive forward Obi Toppin, adding versatile scoring depth behind superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The Miami Heat are having a franchise-changing offseason thus far. The team went out and finally landed the big-name star they've wanted for years in Giannis Antetokounmpo as part of one of the biggest blockbuster deals of the decade. However, given Antetokounmpo's caliber of play, the team had to part with multiple players including 2025 All-Star Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kasparas Jakucionis while also adding Bobby Portis in that same trade. Miami also lost 2026 All-Star guard Norman Powell to the Chicago Bulls in free agency but signed Tim Hardaway Jr. to a one-year deal while also bringing back Simone Fontecchio for another year.

There is one player in the current Heat rotation who the team could be actively trying to shop around the league. Nikola Jovic, the team's first-round pick from 2022, signed a four-year rookie contract extension worth $62.4 million prior to last season. Pat Riley really liked what he had to offer for the foreseeable future. However, it seems the team is already regretting that contract decision as Jovic was basically a non-factor down the stretch of the regular season, only appearing in eight games post-January. There are some players out there in trade discussions who come close to matching Jovic's new salary but Miami may need to attach a pick alongside the young forward. Here is a possible trade involving Jovic that could happen prior to next season:

Heat receive: F Obi Toppin

Pacers receive: F Nikola Jovic, 2027 second-round draft pick

The Indiana Pacers are coming off a terrible season. Their star guard Tyrese Haliburton missed the entire campaign after suffering a torn Achilles in Game 7 of the 2025 NBA Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Pacers were the most surprising team that season and the future seemed bright for them but with Haliburton's injury, the team decided to go in a different direction for at least last season. They were buyers at the deadline, trading for Los Angeles Clippers center Ivica Zubac and dealing two young players in Benedict Mathurin and Isaiah Jackson despite sitting near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.

Toppin is another player who missed most of last season for Indiana but still put up impressive scoring splits despite only appearing in 24 games. There is a world where the Pacers decide to move on from him as he is guaranteed money for the next two seasons. They could opt to add a guy like Jovic, who is much younger and is under contract for another four years after signing last year's extension, along with an unprotected second-round pick which may not be that valuable.

The Heat could use a player like Toppin to back up the power forward position. Although the team added Portis alongside Antetokounmpo in the blockbuster deal, he could very well be a backup center and Toppin could play the small forward position as well. He's a surprisingly flexible player and could be a strong option for a win-now Miami rotation for the next two seasons.
