Pat Riley hunts a franchise-altering "whale" as Giannis Antetokounmpo hits the market. To land the "Greek Freak", the Miami Heat must outbid deep-pocketed rivals with a youth-heavy trade package.
Miami, FL. – After an underwhelming 43-39 regular season, plus missing the playoffs for the first time since 2019, the Miami Heat need significant changes. Despite battling injuries, the lack of star power compared to the rest of the Eastern Conference was exposed. As the organization entered an early offseason, it’s not a secret that President Pat Riley will be going “whale” hunting ahead of free agency.
It was reported that the Milwaukee Bucks are entertaining offers for former Finals MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Heat has expressed interest in the 10-time All-Star for several years, even when the thought of him getting traded was unrealistic. Despite being the most linked to Antetokounmpo, they certainly won’t be the only ones in the mix. In addition to the early report, the Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, and Minnesota Timberwolves will attempt to land the 13-year veteran.
Antetokounmpo averaged 27.6 points on 62.4 percent shooting, 33.3 percent from behind the arc, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists this past season. However, the 31-year-old battled with several injuries, playing in only 36 games. Supposedly, availability will be the first thing Riley looks at before making any moves.
Regardless, any opportunity to land a superstar of Antetokounmpo’s caliber must be taken.
In terms of draft assets, the Lakers and Celtics pose a significant threat to go after the Bucks’ superstars. Each historic franchise has at least four first-round picks to offer, including swaps. Both are under the first apron, which provides flexibility in what contracts can be utilized in a potential trade.
The Heat has five future first-rounders to offer, plus the No. 13 pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. Regarding players, they might have the best to send in a potential deal. Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware, Kasparas Jakucionis, and Pelle Larsson, all of whom are under the age of 28.
Bucks owner Jimmy Haslam told the media that Antetokounmpo’s future will be decided heading into the NBA Draft, which starts on June 23 and ends the following day.
The Heat will have until then to put together a package that will result in serious conversations, leading to the completion of a trade. If the organization is as committed to competing for championships, then everything outside of three-time All-Star Bam Adebayo has to be on the table.
A superstar is needed in South Florida and this could be the best chance to land one.
