Miami Heat fans are looking for anything to bring in another superstar to their team and boost their slim championship odds.
The latest Anthony Edwards interaction will give them all the hype they need. Edwards had a brief interaction with Heat star Norman Powell, asking about the scenery in Miami.
Fans flooded social media with any link between Edwards and the Heat, including the Minnesota Timberwolves star's comments about coach Erik Spoelstra during the last Olympics.
"He’s been dope. Bringing a lot of energy and Heat Culture," Edwards said about Spoelstra. "It’s exciting to see. His first day with the scout, I was like, ‘I see what they mean when they say Heat Culture.’ He came in with a lot of energy, right to the point, so precise with the detail."
Edwards has been linked to the Heat for a few years now, but those ambitions have largely been out of reach. Acquiring a budding young superstar is difficult, considering he is now the franchise's face and future. It would take a substantial package for Miami to acquire him, and Heat president Pat Riley has shown reluctance to dish away complementary pieces.
Still, you can't stop them from dreaming.
Edwards remains one of the league's fiercest competitors and best scorers. He is averaging 29.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists this season, while earning his fourth All-Star selection and first All-Star Game MVP. But beyond the statistical impact, he is the catalyst in turning around the Timberwolves over the last few postseasons. Steph Curry, LeBron James, Jimmy Butler, Kevin Durant, Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic. The list just goes on, illustrating his lengthy playoff resume at just 24 years old.
Minnesota was favored to lose nearly every series over this period, but reached the Conference Finals in consecutive seasons. Edwards has been prone to questionable turnovers and cold offensive performances, but the success this early in his career only creates optimism for the following years.
As for the Heat, another season of mediocrity looms. Miami lost to the Milwaukee Bucks (25-31) on Tuesday night. They were on a three-game win streak prior, but the fact is, they will likely be another borderline playoff contender this season. They've been decent, but the failure to ascend to the next level keeps them hoping for a superstar to come along and somehow shift the franchise's trajectory.
