April Fool's is probably the worst day for sports fans and journalists.
One of the latest antics from Miami Heat fans is an example of why. A meme from the fanbase is trending on Twitter, showing a fake quote of Heat forward Nikola Jovic agreeing with Jaden Ivey's recent controversial comments.
Ivey has been trending for his public rants, which led the Chicago Bulls to release him earlier this month. His comments have largely been refuted for being homophobic. Heat fans were trollingly trying to get Jovic in the same boat, as he's been public enemy No. 1 in Miami this season.
Jovic has had a massive drop in production this year, averaging 7.3 points on 26.9 percent shooting from 3-point range, with just 3.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists. He's attributed his fall due to the different scheme this season.
"Last year was easy because of the offense we ran and the way we played. I kind of knew what my role was," Jovic said recently. "This year, with an offense where you donāt have calls and donāt really know where to be at what time, itās hard for me because sometimes I play at the five, sometimes I play at the four, sometimes I have the ball in my hands, sometimes I donāt."
Jovic signed a four-year, $62.4 million contract extension in October, which many fans are desperately begging to get out of. He has been actively involved in trade talks as part of a package for bigger stars.
But mostly, it's just to get rid of him. His large stretches with injury and shot-chucking from 3-point range make him nearly unplayable at this rate. It has fueled posts like the Ivey meme, using hilarious methods to push him out of Miami.
In the meantime, the Heat are currently 10th in the Eastern Conference. While they are guaranteed to at least have a play-in spot, their true postseason window is very slim. They play the Toronto Raptors (43-34) on Tuesday night.
