Despite a challenging season, Jaime Jaquez Jr. ignites the Miami Heat's bench, showcasing elite scoring and playmaking to earn Sixth Man of the Year finalist honors.

As the NBA Playoffs are underway, the Miami Heat are not contending for the first time since the 2018-29 season. After an underwhelming year filled with ups and downs, the organization heads towards a pivotal summer. Despite no championship for the foreseeable future, there could be another set of hardwood being delivered to South Florida.

It was announced on Sunday that third-year forward Jaime Jaquez Jr. was named among the finalists for the Sixth Man of the Year award. Alongside him were Denver Nuggets guard Tim Hardaway Jr. and San Antonio Spurs forward Keldon Johnson.

The 25-year-old delivered a bounce-back season after undergoing a “sophomore slump.” He averaged 15.4 points, the most among reserves to play in at least 70 games this season, on 50.7 percent shooting, 31.7 percent from three-point range, five rebounds, and 4.7 assists. Jaquez Jr. has an opportunity to be the first Heat player to win the award since Tyler Herro in 2022, the second in franchise history.

Despite not qualifying for the playoffs, the California native provided consistent production in a reserve role. He carried more offensive responsibilities, especially with the injuries of Tyler Herro and Norman Powell throughout the season.

At the end-of-season exit interviews, Jaquez Jr. was asked about being a legitimate candidate for the award, but acknowledged how the results are out of his control.

“I’ll leave that up to the voters, whoever votes,” he said. “It’s like, I guess, a voting award. I appreciate my teammates and my coaches for always supporting me through this year, giving me a lot of confidence to be able to go out and play my game. For the most part, I’ll leave that up to the voters. I got 70-whatever games to show my game.”

Given the lack of structure in award voting, there is no telling what formula the voters use to determine a winner. In some cases, the team’s record plays a role in the decision, which would favor Johnson with the Spurs the most after finishing second in the Western Conference standings.

The Heat’s seasonal inconsistencies could be seen as deteriorating, but Jaquez Jr.’s impact and durability could be a significant counter to the voters.

The official winner of the Sixth Man of the Year award will be announced on Wednesday, April 22, at 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time. The presentation will be streaming on ESPN before the second matchup of the Detroit Pistons-Orlando Magic series.
