The Miami Heat secures a tenacious, cost-effective defender as Pat Riley navigates financial hurdles. Following a grueling recovery from major injuries, the veteran guard prepares to fortify a championship-caliber bench.
MIAMI, Fla. – Ahead of Sunday’s 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time deadline, the Miami Heat guaranteed Dru Smith’s $2.6 million salary for the 2026-27 season. In an effort to build a championship-caliber supporting cast, Team President Pat Riley and the front office need to navigate financial restrictions.
Pending the finalization of the Giannis Antetokounmpo blockbuster trade, the organization is nearly $18 million below the first apron. It gives the front office a certain level of flexibility as free agency opens on Tuesday, June 30, at 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Retaining a veteran guard – for cheap – who’s under team control and understands the franchise's philosophy can be seen as easier than bringing in somebody new for more money.
Smith’s journey in the league goes beyond the stat sheet. He’s averaged 5.2 points on 42.9 percent shooting, 2.3 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.3 steals in 108 total games over four years.
The 28-year-old has been cut from the roster on several occasions, along with battling a torn Achilles Tendon and torn ACL – suffered in separate seasons. Regardless of uncertainty, Smith always remained on the Heat’s radar. Pending any free agent signings, he’s looking to take on a full-time backup role at point guard, especially with Kasparas Jakucionis being part of the Antetokounmpo package.
Despite a 6-2 frame with a 6-6 wingspan, Smith is a pesky defender. He tends to be a disruptor in the passing lanes, similar to Davion Mitchell. Smith can handle the ball, but doesn’t need to have it to make an impact.
Following the veteran guard’s return – pending the signing of second-round pick Ryan Conwell – the Heat will have five roster spots available, along with a couple of two-way slots to fill.
Smith’s experience and defensive tenacity could be on full display next season. A duo of Antetokounmpo and three-time All-Star Bam Adebayo will likely draw attention from the rest of the league. Smith’s contributions and familiarity with the Heat system will be valuable for a financially stretched roster.
A new chapter will officially commence following July 6th’s new league year. The Heat are in prime position to contend for a championship, especially with the right supporting cast to join the stars.
If the pressure wasn’t already high, Smith has a non-guaranteed $2.9 million team option for the 2027-28 season. This will be the opportunity to show the Heat that he can contribute to championship contention.
