As the Miami Heat pivots toward a roster overhaul, a blockbuster proposal ships the former Sixth Man of the Year to Detroit for a defensive spark and veteran depth.

Miami, FL. – The truth is that the Miami Heat don’t have enough to compete among the top teams in the Eastern Conference. Given the lack of size and star power, especially since the departure of six-time All-Star Jimmy Butler at the 2025 trade deadline, the roster is in desperate need of upgrades.

Everyone around the league is aware that former Finals MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo is the primary target. He’s been on the organization’s wish list for years. After several failed attempts, this offseason appears to be the best chance to get a deal done. However, it doesn’t hurt to have a backup plan.

Former All-Star guard Tyler Herro has been involved in trade rumors since joining the Heat as a 2019 lottery pick. Despite emerging as a cornerstone franchise piece, the 26-year-old hasn’t lived up to expectations when it comes to performing in the big moments. After playing just 33 games this past season, the organization could look to part ways.

According to league insider Jake Ficsher, the Detroit Pistons previously expressed interest in Herro. Despite finishing the regular season with the best record in the Eastern Conference, the team fell short of reaching the Eastern Conference Finals after a seven-game series against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Part of the reason was fourth-year and All-Star center Jalen Duren regressing under the spotlight.

Herro can’t lead a team through the playoffs, but the seven-year guard is capable of contributing in a backseat reserve role. The Wisconsin native won the Sixth Man of the Year award following the 2021-22 regular season, helping the Heat finish with the best record in the Eastern Conference.

Here is a proposed trade that could send Herro to the Motor City:

- Heat receive(s): Caris LeVert, Ron Holland II, and Marcus Sasser

- Pistons receive: Tyler Herro and a 2030 first-round pick (via MIA)

Despite no star arriving in South Florida, it would provide bench depth. LeVert can provide scoring, playing in at least 60 games the last four seasons. Holland II is known to be a pest on defense, which fits the Heat’s philosophy. Sasser has shown flashes of potential, but needs an expanded opportunity to fully blossom.

The Heat could land a proven veteran and two young developing projects who still have more room to grow. Herro might not have another ceiling to reach, which puts the franchise in a difficult position, despite viewing him so highly over the last seven years.

It’s a trade that could provide some stability throughout an 82-game season.
