Simone Fontecchio returns to the Miami Heat on a team-friendly deal, providing critical floor spacing and defensive length for a roster poised to chase another NBA championship.
MIAMI, Fla. – Ahead of the 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time free agency opening, the Miami Heat get an early start on the work ahead. First reported by ESPN, free agent sharpshooting forward Simone Fontecchio intends to return on a one-year contract. He’s coming off a productive season: 8.5 points on 37.5 percent outside shooting, and three rebounds in 90 games, including nine starts.
It’s a veteran minimum deal worth up to $2.6 million with a $2.5 million cap hit.
Fontecchio joined the organization last summer as part of the Duncan Robinson sign-and-trade that sent him to the Detroit Pistons on a three-year, $47.98 million partially-guaranteed contract. He’s a 6-7 forward with a 6-11 wingspan who can space the floor, which is critical for the Giannis Antetokounmpo-Bam Adebayo pairing.
Retaining the 30-year-old with little financial damage gives the Heat enough flexibility to explore the veteran minimum market aggressively. They’ve been linked to several free agents ahead of tonight, such as Tim Hardaway Jr., Anfernee Simons, and Gabe Vincent, among others.
Fontecchio is similar to Robinson as a shooter. He needs screens to create open looks, but can attack the paint. The four-year veteran has a smooth jumper and can put the ball on the floor.
Defensively, Fontecchio will be an excellent fit in a frontcourt that features Antetokounmpo and Adebayo. The lengthy frame makes him serviceable, plus an additional rebounding option.
The Heat will have 11 players on the standard roster – pending the blockbuster trade finalization and second-rounder Ryan Conwell’s signing. Team President Pat Riley and the front office still have over $13 million to work with before crossing the first apron threshold, along with a $11.5 million mid-level exception.
It’s a championship-or-bust season ahead for the South Florida franchise. The importance of landing free agents to add depth and production is arguably more critical than before when Jimmy Butler was around.
Fontecchio expressed interest in returning to the Heat since the end-of-season press conference. The motive was to maintain family stability after splitting tenures between the Detroit Pistons and Utah Jazz. He returns to South Florida with an opportunity to compete for a championship.
It’s worth noting that Fontecchio cannot be traded until Dec. 15 – which is the deadline for most free agents after signing a new contract.
The Heat will have a few more voids to fill, but the roster is nearly complete. Tonight’s free agency is when the rest of the action begins.
