As the Miami Heat face an uncertain offseason, Andrew Wiggins reveals certain feelings about re-signing and addresses a future beyond the upcoming player option.
The NBA Playoffs continue, but the Miami Heat entered an early offseason after suffering a 127-126 loss to the Charlotte Hornets in the early stages of the Play-In Tournament. After experiencing several ups and downs throughout the regular season, the organization heads into the summer facing several questions. They have several players who could be looking for big extensions, including Andrew Wiggins, who has a $30.17 million player option for the 2026-27 season.
The veteran forward arrived in South Florida ahead of the Feb. 6, 2025, trade deadline. He was part of a multi-team blockbuster deal that sent six-time All-Star Jimmy Butler to the Golden State Warriors. Wiggins will be 32 years old before next season ends. He averaged 15.4 points on 47.5 percent shooting, 41.4 percent from three-point range, 4.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.1 steals, and a block in 68 games, starting in all of them.
As the Heat enter a pivotal offseason, Wiggins shared some insight into how free agency could play out.
“Me and my agent will get together whenever the season is done and figure it out,” he told the Miami Herald. “I love Miami. I love being here. Everyone has been great to me. From the organization, the fans, to the city. Just playing winning style of basketball. Being on a team and organization that cares for the players, always wants the best for them. They’re very straight forward and all about winning. It’s kind of an old school vibe here that I like.”
Wiggins proved to be a reliable piece who can leave an impact on both sides of the court. Also, the 12-year veteran has shown great durability, appearing in 50-plus games in all but one season, 2022-23 with the Golden State Warriors.
The Heat would likely prefer to keep Wiggins, but having a one-year, $30.17 million contract in the financial books could result in difficult trade conversations. The organization is expected to go star hunting, revisit conversations surrounding Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo. Wiggins would likely be part of a potential package as the Midwest organization expressed interest in the veteran forward.
There is a possibility that the Toronto, Ontario native declines the player option and tests the market, entering unrestricted free agency. Wiggins would likely generate significant interest around the league, but runs the risk of receiving offers less than $30.17 million.
The Heat can begin negotiations as soon as the NBA Finals are done, which ends as early as June 10, at the latest, on June 19.
