Bam Adebayo dismisses needing extra fuel against the Washington Wizards, focusing on his own game and the Miami Heat's crucial playoff push.
The last time the Miami Heat hosted the Washington Wizards, Bam Adebayo scored 83 points, the second-highest scoring performance in league history. Despite controversy surrounding it, specifically over the high volume of free-throw attempts, the 28-year-old will remain in the record books alongside basketball legends and Hall of Famers Wilt Chamberlain and Kobe Bryant.
As both teams clash again on Saturday afternoon at the Kaseya Center, Adebayo doesn’t need “extra motivation” for the matchup.
“Nobody wants to get 80 dropped on them,” he told reporters on Friday. “I expect the [Washington] players, they might just go off script and not listen and try something else.”
While the Wizards are already eliminated from postseason contention, the Heat are still fighting for position in the Eastern Conference standings. They currently sit at the 10-seed with a 40-37 record. The Heat are only three games away from getting out of the Play-In Tournament. Despite the slim chances of escaping it, Adebayo is focused on the present rather than looking too far ahead.
“Take it one game at a time,” he added. “We have five games left and then after that we’ll figure it out from there.”
The Heat will face the Wizards without first-time All-Star guard Norman Powell as he continues to recover from an illness. The 32-year-old will miss his third consecutive game. Powell is still on pace to conclude a career season, but missing 12 of 18 games towards the end of the regular season isn’t ideal.
The team is currently behind the Orlando Magic in the standings, who secured a 138-127 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night. Also, they own the tie-breaker over the Heat, which is a significant asset given how close the race is to the finish.
Following the home matchup against the Wizards, the Heat will embark on a three-game road trip with two critical matchups against the Toronto Raptors, who are also in the Play-In Tournament. It would take a miracle to escape it, but earning an opportunity to gain home-court advantage is possible.
As the Heat’s captain, Adebayo is responsible for leading the team in the midst of an underwhelming season. It likely won’t take another historic record-breaking performance against the Wizards, but a win in any fashion is important.
The organization’s future could be determined by how the season ends. The same could be said about Adebayo’s future if drastic changes aren’t made.
However, the focus is on the present.
