The Miami Heat must make some big decisions this offseason. With multiple contracts coming off the books along with the team's plethora of assets, young players and future tradable draft picks, this offseason is the perfect time to strike and become a contender in the Eastern Conference again. One big decision Pat Riley has on his hands is what to do with Tyler Herro. Despite a breakout season in 2024-25, Herro has seemingly become an expendable backcourt option and could find himself dealt this summer.
Bleacher Report released an article, proposing multiple trades involving the 2019 first-rounder. One of the most significant proposals comes from a trade between the Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves:
Heat receive: F Julius Randle, 2026 first-round draft pick (No. 28 overall)
Timberwolves receive: G Tyler Herro, 2026 second-round draft pick (No. 41 overall)
When looking at the Heat's roster, Herro makes the most sense to be traded this offseason. Right now, it is unknown what the future holds for Herro in Miami. The 26-year-old was eligible for a contract extension in October but the team opted to extend young forward Nikola Jovic instead. Now, Herro enters next season with an expiring contract.
If the Timberwolves were to make a deal like this, it would be assumed Herro would sign an extension with the franchise. The team's star, Anthony Edwards, reportedly expressed his desire for the front office to shake things up in Minnesota. Donte DiVincenzo, the team's starting shooting guard this season, suffered a torn Achilles in the first round of the playoffs. He is expected to miss most, if not all, of next season. That leaves a void in the backcourt for a scoring option opposite Edwards. While Herro may not be the superstar Edwards presumably wants to play alongside, he is a strong scorer.
Julius Randle is no player to scoff at as part of this return package either. He has been pretty polarizing over the past few seasons but has been a consistently solid scorer since his breakthrough season with the New York Knicks in 2021. Randle was sent to Minnesota as part of the Karl-Anthony Towns blockbuster deal. In Minnesota, Randle has not been the team's leading scorer but has played a solid second fiddle to Edwards. However, Randle is the type of player who commands the ball and he can do just that in Miami.
Randle, 31, signed a three-year contract extension last offseason worth $100 million and is under contract through next season with a player option for the 2027-28 campaign. Also, the Heat add another first-round pick this upcoming draft to help develop the youth on the roster. Randle averaged north of 20 points this past season and could do the same again in Erik Spoelstra's system.
