With roster flexibility dwindling, Pat Riley may consider a blockbuster deal sending Bam Adebayo to the Boston Celtics for a massive haul of defensive talent and future draft capital.
Miami, FL. – It’s no secret that the Miami Heat have a ton of issues to address throughout the offseason, especially with upgrading the roster. Despite having three players averaging 20-plus points in Norman Powell, Tyler Herro, and Bam Adebayo, the trio only logged roughly 217.6 minutes on the court together, 12.8 on average in 17 games, according to NBA Advanced Stats. Despite Heat President Pat Riley’s ongoing commitment to compete for championships, it will likely result in drastic measures to achieve the ultimate goal.
The franchise will be without cap space this summer, but $40.91 million below the first apron. They will have a couple of trade exceptions available from the past deals of Duncan Robinson to the Detroit Pistons and Haywood Highsmith to the Brooklyn Nets. However, the lack of draft assets could alter the Heat’s chances of landing a superstar.
There are unpreferrable pathways to returning to contention, such as trading a highly valuable player in Adebayo. Despite Riley not looking to trade the three-time All-Star, the 81-year-old mentioned he has “no final say” in decision-making.
Also, after superstar Luka Doncic was traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers, it proved that everyone has a price.
Adebayo averaged a double-double this past season: 20.1 points on 44.2 percent shooting, 31.8 percent from behind the arc, 10 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.2 steals in 73 games started. In an early-March matchup against the Washington Wizards, he went on to have a historic 83-point performance. If Adebayo were on the open market, there would surely be a long list of teams presenting significant offers, including a historic rival.
The Boston Celtics surpassed preseason expectations, finishing with a 56-26 record, second-best in the Eastern Conference. However, the team lost in the first round of the playoffs against the Philadelphia 76ers, blowing the first 3-1 lead in franchise history.
Trade deadline acquisition Nikola Vucevic underperformed throughout the series: 6.2 points on 37.8 percent shooting, 29.2 percent from behind the arc, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. He logged a “Did Not Play–Coach’s Decision” in game seven. As Vucevic enters free agency, the Celtics could attempt to lure Adebayo out of South Florida.
According to Fadeaway World, the Heat could receive a long haul of assets from the 18-time championship organization:
Celtics receive: Adebayo
Heat receive: Derrick White, Sam Hauser, Hugo Gonzalez, 2027 first-round pick (via Boston), 2028 first-round pick swap (via Boston), 2028 first-round pick swap (via San Antonio), 2030 first-round pick swap (via Boston), and 2031 first-round pick (via Boston)
“The Celtics’ interior weakness is patched by Adebayo’s presence,” Ishaan Bhattacharya wrote. “He’s a DPOY-caliber defender, extremely switchable, and has shown a willingness to improve his three-point shot over the last few seasons. He’d be the perfect center for Mazzulla’s system, but it could cost almost all of the franchise’s future draft assets to make it happen. But it might be worth it to maximize the Tatum and Brown timeline, with this forming a true big three of star players in their prime.”
Adebayo has been an essential piece for the Heat after nine seasons since entering the league.
However, if the organization fails to contend for a championship, it could force a reset.
