After 22 seasons cultivating the Miami Heat’s renowned developmental pipeline, Eric Amsler joins the Los Angeles Lakers’ front office to replicate that scouting blueprint amid a turbulent ownership transition.

MIAMI, Fla. – Miami Heat vice president of player personnel Eric Amsler has reportedly taken the assistant general manager position with the Los Angeles Lakers, according to ESPN insider Shams Charania.

After 22 seasons with the organization, the 49-year-old makes way to the West Coast. Amsler held numerous positions, initially joining the Heat as an intern. He was the Scouting and Information Coordinator from 2005 to 2007, Scouting and Player Personnel Coordinator from 2007 to 2014, Director of Scouting Operations from 2015 to 2018, Director of Scouting/Assistant Director of Player Personnel/Assistant General Manager of the Sioux Falls Skyforce from 2018 to 2019, and Director of Player Personnel/General Manager from 2019 to 2023, and was then named Vice President.

Amsler has been part of the same front office regime as Andy Elisburg and Team President Pat Riley. He understands what it takes to build championship-contending rosters. The Skyforce have experienced four winning seasons, including a Western Conference Finals appearance in the 2024 G League playoffs.

The Lakers are in the midst of a power struggle.

Mark Walter, who bought a majority stake in the franchise in late October last year, has surprisingly agreed to sell his entire share to Josh Kushner and former Disney CEO Bob Iger. Walter is under federal investigation regarding billions in undisclosed loans.

However, the real issues lie at the dinner table.

Five of the six Buss family siblings, including Joey and Jesse, voted unanimously (5-0) to sell the family’s remaining stakes in the Lakers. Governor Jeanie Buss is protesting the decision to sell ownership.

Given the circumstances, Team President Rob Pelinka’s future could be in jeopardy. Regardless, Amsler is expecting to start a new chapter in the Purple and Gold. The Lakers are enhancing their scouting personnel. The Heat are arguably the best in the league at discovering overlooked talent and developing them into impactful role players.

A few recent examples are Duncan Robinson, Max Strus, Gabe Vincent, Caleb Martin, and Haywood Highsmith. Although none of them are currently with the Heat, they’ve carved out extended careers by developing through the organization with its core values.

The Lakers will need to discover hidden gems every once in a while. Amsler has the blueprint to accomplish that. The Lakers have struggled to develop young talent, but that could change soon with new front office personnel set to join. Amsler has worked hard behind the scenes, but now he’ll have some spotlight.
