Miami Heat assistant Caron Butler says he's ready to take the next step in the coaching world

Caron Butler made his impact as an NBA player during his 16-year career.

Now, he's making it as an assistant with the Miami Heat and ready to take the next step of becoming a head coach. He recently spoke about his desires in an interview with Yahoo! Sports.

Butler is getting antsy about moving forward in his coaching career. When asked about reaching another level, he didn't hold anything back.

"100 percent," Butler said of wanting a head coaching gig. "I feel like I'm ready. You cannot tiptoe around or shortcut any path if you want to be the best or potentially be a head coach in the Association."

After his playing career ended in 2016, Butler began coaching with the Heat in 2020. In that time, he has helped them make two appearances in the NBA Finals. The Heat lost to the LeBron James-led Los Angeles Lakers during the bubble season in Orlando and fell to Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets in 2023.

Along the way, Butler has gained plenty of experience while working alongside the likes of Heat team president Pat Riley, coach Erik Spoelstra, and assistants Chris Quinn and Malik Allen.

With jobs open for the Chicago Bulls, Orlando Magic, New Orleans Pelicans and Portland Trail Blazers, Butler sees no reason why he shouldn't be a candidate for any of the openings.

Butler is hoping to follow the lead of former Heat assistant David Fizdale, who was in Miami from 2008-16 before taking the head coaching position with the Memphis Grizzlies. Later, Fizdale coached the New York Knicks for one season.

"Learning under the tutelage of the Godfather [Riley] and one of the best coaches of our generation in Erik Spoelstra," Butler said. "And then my colleagues, Chris Quinn and Malik Allen ... the proximity of all of that information. My knowledge of a 16-year career and going through the trials and tribulations that I've been through on the court, off the court, I'm really ready to take that step forward."

It may not happen this offseason but eventually Butler is going to make that next move.
