Lockdown specialist Davion Mitchell aims to join elite company as only the third guard to ever claim the NBA's top defensive honor while anchoring Miami Heat's championship-caliber rotation.
MIAMI, Fla. – Although NBA players will talk about prioritizing team success, they still envision individual goals and accolades; Miami Heat’s starting point guard Davion Mitchell is aiming for history.
“My individual goal is to win Defensive Player of the Year,” he told Hot Hot Hoops. “No statistical goals, that’s all I got.”
If Mitchell were to win the award, he would be just the third guard in league history to claim it – Gary Payton (1995-96) and Marcus Smart (2021-22). Last season, the 28-year-old had a goal of making an All-Defensive team, but it didn’t happen. Mitchell pointed to not living up to his own standard during the Heat’s exit press conference.
Ahead of training camp at Florida Atlantic University, the former 2021 first-round lottery pick, along with the rest of the roster, passed the organization’s body-fat tests. Mitchell showed physical progression throughout the offseason. As the Heat’s starting point guard and leading ball-handler, he will carry the heavy responsibility of initiating an offense featuring stars Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.
However, Mitchell’s impact and value are mainly highlighted on the defensive side of the court. Despite being an undersized six-foot-and-200-pound guard, he can be disruptive in the passing lanes and gets physical against bigger players. However, Defensive Player of the Year could end up being a long shot.
Only two guards have won the award out of 44 recipients, who mainly consist of centers and forwards. Also, there have been other strong candidates in recent years who still haven’t won it. Sticking with guards, Jrue Holiday is one of the best two-way players in the league. He played a pivotal role in two championship runs with the Milwaukee Bucks (2021) and Boston Celtics (2025).
Holiday has made six All-Defensive teams, but only one Defensive Player of the Year finalist campaign with the New Orleans Pelicans in the 2018-19 season. He’s averaged at least one steal in 16 of 17 career seasons in the league.
Meanwhile, a teammate of Mitchell has experience in falling short of winning Defensive Player of the Year on a handful of occasions. Adebayo is one of the premier defenders in the league who can guard all five positions. He’s finished top five in voting five times, including one finalist campaign in the 2023-24 season.
As the Heat have championship aspirations and 31 nationally televised games, Mitchell will have opportunities to carve out a case without the national media overlooking it. Every season, history is made and records are broken. Although Mitchell’s chances are slim, they aren’t completely shut down. The Heat hold a high standard for defense and it should propel the Georgia native to some recognition.
