It appears Miami Heat guard Davion Mitchell wants to prove the doubters wrong this season
Miami Heat guard Davion Mitchell has always played with a chip on his shoulder.
He has never been considered good enough to play on a contending team. Some wonder can the Heat win with him running the offense. They say they should go after a more decorated point guard.
Mitchell is responding this summer the way he has throughout his career. He just keeps working. And fans love it.
Mitchell has become a fan favorite this offseason by sharing his journey on social media. He's posted a few videos of him constantly working out, trying to become a better player. He wants to be an asset rather than a liability.
While Mitchell may not be gifted as other point guards in the league, few will out-work him. He has earned the reputation of being one of the hardest workers on the team. This is what the Heat need on a team that is now anchored by Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.
Antetokounmpo arrives after 13 superstar seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks. The two-time MVP and one-time champion was ready to move on after the Bucks missed the postseason for the first time since 2016. Adebayo can finally slide from the shadows of Tyler Herro and Jimmy Butler after serving as the third-option for the past few years.
With Antetokounmpo and Adebayo in the spotlight, it's up to Mitchell to become the Heat's intangible player. He has to be the game-managing quarterback. The Heat don't need Mitchell to score 20 points a night. They don't need him to dish out 10 assists each game.
They need a defensive-minded guard who can produce points when needed. As if Mitchell wasn't already a strong defender, he's working on becoming even better. According to ESPN's Kendrick Perkins, Mitchell wants to workout with Iman Shumpert and Tony Allen. They are two of the better perimeter-defending guards in recent NBA history.
If Mitchell can take his game up a notch, it could mean a world of a difference for the Heat this season.
