The Sioux Falls Skyforce landed center Mo Bamba, a former sixth-overall pick. This strategic gamble challenges the Miami Heat’s developmental depth and tests Miami's renowned player-polishing reputation.

The Miami Heat have had a very prolific offseason, adding multiple big-name players such as Giannis Antetokounmpo and Klay Thompson. With all that attention the NBA roster is receiving, the Heat, through their G-League affiliate, just made an under-the-radar move for a former first-round pick.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Sioux Falls Skyforce acquired the G-League rights to center Mo Bamba. As part of that deal, the Heat also traded away their G-League rights to Trevor Keels to the Washington Wizards' affiliate, the Capital City Go-Go.

Now, on paper, this doesn't seem like a move that could affect the Heat's active roster. However, the Heat currently have center Vladislav Goldin on a two-way contract and Bamba's addition could create some competition for that two-way roster spot.

Bamba, 28, hasn't had the strongest career thus far. As a high school prospect in 2017, he was considered one of the top players in the nation as a five-star recruit out of Philadelphia. He joined the Texas Longhorns under Shaka Smart for his lone collegiate season where he was named to the second-team All-Big 12 team before being drafted at No. 6 by the Orlando Magic in the 2018 draft.

The center never quite figured it out right away and it took a couple of seasons for him to be productive. He wasn't a consistent starter for the team until the 2021-22 season where he averaged career-highs playing 25 minutes a night and starting 69 games. That was his last truly productive season as Orlando dealt him to the Los Angeles Lakers the next season where the current outlook of his career officially began.

Since joining Los Angeles midway through the 2022-23 season, Bamba has not lasted more than a season with any team. He signed with his hometown Philadelphia 76ers for one season before joining the Los Angeles Clippers in 2024 and since then, he has bounced around to three other NBA teams without making many appearances at the NBA level.

While Bamba has had a rough go at the NBA level, he was a highly-touted young player for a reason and maybe the Heat's player development staff can help unlock some aspects of his game. Erik Spoelstra developed a couple of G-League centers over the past few seasons such as Omer Yurtseven and Orlando Robinson. Both of those players had decent stints at the NBA level and Bamba has shown more promise than both of those players.
