A career season fades with injury, leaving Norman Powell's Miami Heat future shrouded in uncertainty as he enters unrestricted free agency.

The last time the Miami Heat missed the playoffs, the organization completed a sign-and-trade to acquire Jimmy Butler, who left a significant impact despite an abrupt ending to a six-year tenure. After a 127-126 loss to the Charlotte Hornets in the first round of the Play-In Tournament on Tuesday night, there will be several questions entering the offseason, including Norman Powell’s free agency.

The 32-year-old was named a first-time All-Star and had a career season: 21.7 points on 47 percent shooting, 38 percent from three-point range, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.1 steals in 58 games. However, after the break, Powell dealt with injuries and illness, which disrupted his role and momentum on the team, resulting in a lack of success and missing the playoffs. He will enter unrestricted free agency, where there isn’t any guarantee the veteran guard will return.

“I’m not sure [how free agency will play out],” Powell told the media at exit interviews. “I’m going to talk to my agent. I know my agent is going to talk to Pat [Riley] and the front office and figure those things out. I have no idea. I’ll connect with my agent sometime next week and figure out how those conversations went. We’ll start the game plan from there, what free agency looks like, and what the next couple of weeks look like for me. Right now, it’s just decompressing, relaxing, getting some time to spend with my family, then getting right back into it sometime and the end of next week or the beginning of the week.”

The Heat will have an opportunity to negotiate a new contract immediately with Powell’s representatives, Jason Gulshon of Gulshon Sports Management, after the NBA Finals. The series begins on Wednesday, June 3. It ends earliest on Wednesday, June 10, and latest on Friday, June 19.

There’s no telling as of this moment whether or not Gulshon and the Heat’s front office will see eye to eye on new terms of a contract, given how Powell ended the season and the age factor. Also, the organization is known to go star-hunting, which would likely mark an early end to the All-Star guard’s tenure. Another factor would be Tyler Herro, who is eligible for a contract extension.

The offseason is likely to be pivotal for the Heat’s future, especially to keep team captain Bam Adebayo happy.

“I enjoyed my time here in Miami,” Powell added. “I’ve always wanted to play for the Heat. I thought it was a good year for me, in spite of the injuries and some of the setbacks. I enjoyed my time, the staff, my teammates, and everything that came along with the season. I thought we had a great time off the court, really bonding and being able to joke around. That’s the most important part about the season.”
