Kendrick Perkins challenges Miami Heat's Bam Adebayo to elevate offensive production following a sluggish season opener, insisting a championship run requires more than just All-Star level effort.

MIAMI, Fla. – Following a 131-106 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Opening Night, the Miami Heat look for the first win of the 2026-27 season against the Detroit Pistons at the Kaseya Center.

It’s too early to panic, but there could be early concerns that need addressing. Although Giannis Antetokounmpo had an excellent debut, co-star Bam Adebayo did not have the best night. He finished with 15 points on 50 percent shooting, seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals in 31 minutes. Adebayo made just one three-pointer of seven attempts.

The three-time All-Star had a team-worst -28 in the plus-minus box.

Adebayo often carries a ton of responsibilities on both sides of the court, but there’s still a level of expectation for him to meet. NBA Champion and ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins believes there is still another level to reach; the question is, will he?

“Giannis is a generational talent,” he said. “We know what he’s going to bring to the table, but when is Bam going to take the leap from being an All-Star to an All-NBA caliber player. Averaging 18-20 points, that’s not going to cut it. You have to average 25. It’s time for Bam to elevate his game.”

Adebayo has been a critical piece to the Heat franchise, especially in the last seven seasons. He’s been the heart and soul of the locker room, while taking on captain responsibilities. However, Adebayo needs to be a bigger complementary co-star to Antetokounmpo than he was to Jimmy Butler.

In the playoffs, everyone knew the Heat had a star who could take over. Butler would often be regarded as the best player in a series; meanwhile, Adebayo wasn’t entirely close to that standard. In the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals, it was Caleb Martin who nearly won the Larry Bird MVP over Butler, shy by one vote (5-4).

Adebayo has proven to win the Heat playoff games, but being the best player of an entire series remains to be determined. Even as Antetokounmpo is the main attraction in South Florida, the 29-year-old has to reach new heights in production for the Heat to remain competitive in a loaded Eastern Conference.

The supporting cast didn’t have the best night as well on Opening Night, but it starts with the stars; one of the two delivered.

Adebayo has the Heat’s trust to the fullest extent, which can be shown in a three-year, $160.34 million contract signed a couple of summers ago. It kicks in this season as the organization went all in to compete for a championship. Adebayo has a big responsibility in contributing to those great efforts. He has plenty of playoff experience, which includes reaching the NBA Finals twice.

It’s a new season with greater expectations, meaning bigger production will be needed.
