The Miami Heat could have the edge over the Boston Celtics in the race for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo

The Boston Celtics are reportedly entering the mix for the service of Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo during NBA free agency.

But at least one league insider thinks the Miami Heat are still the favorite. Speaking on his podcast, Kevin O'Connor of Yahoo! Sports said the Celtics remain behind the Heat because of the Bucks' lack of interest in Jaylen Brown. He is the key trade piece if there is a trade between the Celtics and Bucks for Antetokounmpo.

“I don’t think the Bucks want Jaylen Brown," O'Connor said. "I think a Giannis deal is probably a lot simpler to Miami. The conversations I’ve had is it seems like it would probably just be Milwaukee and Miami. It seems a more simple deal. Boston I think it would be a bit more complex”

O'Connor is among the several league insiders who have picked the Heat to land Antetokounmpo. They are hoping to upgrade after missing the playoffs for the first time since 2019. Pairing Antetokounmpo with Bam Adebayo would give the Heat arguably the best frontcourt in the league. The Big Three is complete with guard Norman Powell if he re-signs during free agency.

“The Heat are indeed the favorite to land Giannis Antetokounmpo…. Some sources even expect a trade to happen as soon as the NBA Finals conclude, though the longer this series goes the more time there could be for other teams to step up their offers.”

The move would also appease an angry fan base that has been upset with team president Pat Riley. He has chose to remain with the same core the past few years, which hasn't led to a championship.

The Heat haven't made a splash move in the offseason since trading for Jimmy Butler seven years ago. That move led to two NBA Finals appearances but not titles.
