NBA Twitter Runs Wild After Andrew Wiggins Buzzer Beater cover image

Miami Heat fans were getting ready for a second overtime against the Cleveland Cavaliers as Donovan Mitchell hit a step-back 3-pointer with less than 0.5 seconds left.

But then, Andrew Wiggins happened. The veteran forward had his own heroics Monday night, a last-second slam dunk to cap off a thrilling victory for Miami. And NBA Twitter went wild.

Wiggins ended the night with 23 points on 61.5 percent shooting, nearing his season-high in scoring. Miami has now won three in a row, projecting itself into third place in the Eastern Conference.

But honestly, a lot more people were confused at the defensive breakdown, not having a single player in the paint to defend an obvious finish at the basket.

It's still early in the season, but this victory is an extension of the trailblazing start Miami is having. The fast-paced offense is averaging 125.5 points. That is the best in the league so far, which is a complete swing for a team nearing the bottom of the last few seasons.

And mind you, this is still without All-Star Tyler Herro, their best scorer last season.

"3rd seed, 5-0 at home, 7-4 top 2 in PPG and pace this year. Honestly, it looks like we are watching a new Heat team," one user tweeted.

Wiggins discussed the game plan for executing this play, crediting Davion Mitchell and Nikola Jovic as the playmakers who would carry the game-winner.

"The coaches threw up a great play, and Niko gave me a perfect pass," Wiggins said in his postgame interview. "[Davion] Mitchell got me open with a great screen, and I was there to finish the job. I'm happy that we can get this win. It was a hard-fought win. Hopefully, we can do the same thing when we play them in a couple of days."

This game-winner nearly overshadowed the star performances from Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Norman Powell, who combined for 55 points on the evening. Powell's addition to the Heat is shaping up to be one of the best offseason moves across the league.

"He is such a proven versatile scorer," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "He can do it in so many different ways. I love the versatility of his offensive talent. He can play off the ball, he can play on the ball, he can play pick-and-roll ball, he can play driving, catch-and-go game. He's developed this toolkit over the course of his career because he had to play a lot of different roles, but he's clever, too. He knows how to use players' aggression against them. We're super grateful to have him."

The Heat play the Cavaliers again on Wednesday night.
