REPORT: Miami Heat Now 'Monitoring' Guard Kyrie Irving

Struggling with a sluggish start, Pat Riley and the Miami Heat's front office is weighing a blockbuster move for Kyrie Irving to bolster the team's rotation and spark a postseason climb.

The Miami Heat are now officially in the win column after a Wednesday night victory over the Atlanta Hawks. It certainly has not been all sunshine and rainbows for the team to start this season with a 1-4 record with some players disappointing but it does take time for a new-look team to gel.

With this sluggish start to the regular season, people are quickly panicking about the team's prospects at finishing as a top team in the Eastern Conference. With that said, ESPN's Shams Charania made an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday and reported the Heat are monitoring Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving at the moment while also questioning what compensation would be involved in a potential deal.

Irving recently returned to the court for the first time since March 2025 after suffering a torn ACL and missing the entire 2025-26 season. So far in his return, Irving has performed admirably, even helping lead the Mavericks to an upset victory over Miami on Monday night. Through four games, he is averaging 18 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists while shooting 49.1 percent from the field along with 33.3 percent from three-point range.

Irving, 34, was included in trade discussions throughout the offseason and the Heat could be a destination even after all of their offseason acquisitions. A trade for Irving would most likely include Andrew Wiggins and Nikola Jovic as the two main outgoing pieces. Davion Mitchell and Bobby Portis are other names who could be included in a potential deal as well. Charania included in his report that he believes it will cost more than one draft pick as well.

The Mavericks were one of the worst teams in the NBA in their first full season after trading Luka Doncic. However, their No. 1 overall pick, Cooper Flagg, won the Rookie of the Year award and their rebuild is off to a great start. The team traded Anthony Davis to the Washington Wizards at last year's deadline, waived Klay Thompson before he joined Miami and still have Irving on the roster. While Irving is a phenomenal player, it doesn't make total sense for him to remain on the roster given the youth and direction of the team.

Mitchell has played great for Miami as the team's starting point guard throughout the first week of the season despite the Heat's woes. However, if the team has the chance to upgrade for a player like Irving, that may be an opportunity that Pat Riley and the front office can't pass up.
