Although Miami Heat All-Star guard Tyler Herro has two seasons remaining on his current deal, he is seeking a lucrative contract extension from the organization.
The 25-year-old earned his first All-Star appearance of his career in the 2024-2025 season, so it's obvious he is improving. Still, the Heat appear against paying him past his present deal for a very specific reason.
ESPN's Brian Windhorst shared what he's hearing about the possibility of a Herro contract extension, writing, "Tyler Herro is coming off an All-Star season and is definitely interested in extending with the Heat, but there haven't been substantive talks to his point and a deal is doubtful, sources say."
"In a vacuum, Herro is the player the Heat probably should be most interested in extending, and Herro saw former All-Star Bam Adebayo get a large extension last year. But it doesn't appear to be in the offing," Windhorst concluded.
There's no debate on whether Herro deserves a contract extension, but the parties will likely be incredibly far apart on the terms of one. Not to mention, the info ESPN's Tim Bontemps brought to the table about Miami's long-term plan.
"The answer to what will happen with Miami's top extension candidates can be found in the extension that Miami did sign at the start of training camp with forward Nikola Jovic, the No. 27 pick in the 2022 NBA draft," Bontemps wrote. That four-year pact worth a little over $60 million starts out at $16.2 million in 2026-27, before dipping to $14.9 million in 2027-28 and then going back up again."
"And why did Miami do that? Because, sources say, the Heat -- like many other teams around the league -- are planning for that aforementioned 2027 free agent class," Bontemps concluded.
If the Heat aren't willing to pay Herro in the long term, it's entirely possible his name will once again be found in trade rumors this season.
Heat Players Crash Erik Spoelstra Press Conference
Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra was named the Team USA Basketball head coach recently, and deservingly so.
Spoelstra is a three-time champion with the Heat, leading the organization to two titles as their head coach in 2012 and 2013. Fast forward to October 16, Spoelstra was having his press conference for Team USA.
The Heat's roster is clearly incredibly proud of their coach, as a group of the players crashed his press conference waving around American flags. Those in attendance for this comedic act included new guard Norman Powell, team captain Bam Adebayo, guard Terry Rozier, and rising forward Jaime Jaquez Jr.
Although Spoelstra has yet another responsibility on his plate with Team USA, he is surely focused on the Heat's opener against the Orlando Magic on October 22.
