The Miami Heat are one team who have settled in mediocrity over the past couple of seasons. In 2023, the team finished the regular season as the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference and miraculously made a deep playoff run, winning the Eastern Conference title before losing in five games to the Denver Nuggets in the NBA Finals. In 2024, they finished the regular season as the No. 8 seed and were a first-round exit in the playoffs against the Boston Celtics, losing in five games. Last year, they finished as the No. 10 seed but clawed their way through the Play-In tournament before being swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Now, this season is shaping up to have a similar finish.
Bleacher Report released an article, testing the "panic meter" for those teams who are currently contenders for spots in the Play-In tournament. The Heat earned a spot in the "High Panic" tier alongside the Charlotte Hornets and Orlando Magic.
"The good news: The Charlotte Hornets, Miami Heat and Orlando Magic are all guaranteed to at least make the play-in tournament," the article wrote. "The bad news: Two of these three are likely staring down a 9-10 single elimination play-in game."
The Heat's month of March has been largely up-and-down. The team reached a high point with their seven-game winning streak along with Bam Adebayo's historic 83-point performance on March 10. However, the team quickly fell into a slump, losing seven of their last eight games.
"The Heat have gone just 2-6 since Bam Adebayo's historic 83-point night against the Washington Wizards, with the NBA's now second-place single game scoring leader shooting 37.6 percent overall and 21.6 percent from three over this span," the article added. "Ending the season in the play-in tournament would be a woeful finish after such a landmark moment."
Miami was viewed as one of the more surprising teams in the East for the first month-and-a-half of the season behind the strong play of Norman Powell. Despite Tyler Herro's absence, the Heat were high up in the standings. Given the great start this team had, a Play-In tournament appearance would be disappointing. If the Play-In doesn't go well, there could be massive changes made this offseason.
