Should the Miami Heat Panic This Soon in the NBA Season?

Despite landing Giannis Antetokounmpo, an winless start and disjointed chemistry have South Beach reeling. The Miami Heat must fix perimeter defense and find consistency before this dream season evaporates.

MIAMI, Fla. – The Miami Heat have started the 2026-27 NBA season 0-3, which is a first since 2007; 0-5.

Despite the summer honeymoon phase with the arrival of Giannis Antetokounmpo, the excitement has yet to translate to the basketball court. Although he scored over 30 points in back-to-back home games against the Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons, the dominance hasn't resulted in a win.

In the first two games of the season, the supporting cast hasn't provided much of a boost, including three-time All-Star center Bam Adebayo. He scored a combined 19 points against the Timberwolves and Pistons on 44.4 percent shooting. Adebayo is supposed to be the co-star, alongside Antetokounmpo, but they haven't clicked just yet.

Afterwards, the opposite occurred in the Heat's 115-110 loss to the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday night. The supporting cast delivered a competitive impact; meanwhile, Antetokounmpo struggled. He finished with 14 points on 36.4 percent shooting, six rebounds, three assists, and a steal.

Davion Mitchell and Adebayo combined for 44 points, plus Pelle Larsson (15) and Bobby Portis Jr. (13) reached double figures in scoring off the bench. However, the efforts can't overshadow the fact that the Heat trailed by as many as 23 through the first three quarters. The Hornets outscored them 30-17 in the third with a 17-5 run.

The Heat allowed five unanswered field goals, resulting in 13 points.

It's been a display of unbalanced basketball through the first three games of this season. Either the superstar shines and the others don't or the polar opposite.

The Heat currently have the third-best paint defense in the league, but the worst for the perimeter. Opponents (Timberwolves, Pistons, and Hornets) have made a combined 55 three-pointers on 131 attempts (42 percent).

Although it's still fairly early before panic buttons legitimately need to be pushed, the Heat needs to show consistent signs of being a championship contender, especially in the Eastern Conference. Understandably, a new roster needs time to find on-court chemistry, but the Philadelphia 76ers are currently 3-0 and overcame a 29-point deficit in a 114-106 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Adding LeBron James and Jaylen Brown isn't as simple as implementing players into a new system.

However, Sixers head coach Nick Nurse has found a way to make it work so far.

The Heat need that first win of the season and the next opportunity comes against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday night at the Kaseya Center.
