As Pat Riley pairs Giannis Antetokounmpo with Bam Adebayo, free agent Bradley Beal emerges as a high-stakes target to bolster the Miami Heat's perimeter shooting and championship aspirations.

MIAMI, Fla. – Ahead of tonight’s 6:00 p.m. Eastern Time free agency opening, the Miami Heat will have five roster spots to fill – pending second-rounder Ryan Conwell’s official contract signing. Team President Pat Riley and the front office struck gold by landing Giannis Antetokounmpo in a blockbuster deal. He’s the best co-star for three-time All-Star Bam Adebayo since Jimmy Butler’s departure at the 2025 trade deadline.

However, star power alone doesn’t automatically win championships. It takes a well-rounded supporting cast to help claim the Larry O’Brien trophy. Given the new pairing of Adebayo and Antetokounmpo, outside shooting will be at the top of the priority list.

The Heat have been linked to several free agents, including Tim Hardaway Jr., but a new option recently emerged. It was reported on Monday afternoon that three-time All-Star guard Bradley Beal declined his $5.6 million player option to return to the Los Angeles Clippers – set to enter unrestricted free agency. The 33-year-old only appeared in six games, undergoing season-ending left hip surgery in mid-November.

Although he’s three years removed from an 11-season tenure with the Washington Wizards, it’s where Beal made a mark in the league. He averaged 22.1 points on 46 percent shooting, 4.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 1.1 steals in 695 total games playing in the D.C. area.

According to NBA TV insider Chris Haynes, there’s mutual interest between Beal and the South Florida franchise.

“He has some interest and value [on the open market],” he said. “A player [of Beal’s caliber] is not turning down a player option unless they have some interest elsewhere. Watch out for the Miami Heat.”

Both parties have been linked prior to the one-time All-NBA guard being traded to the Phoenix Suns in the 2023 offseason. As part of a five-year, $251.02 max contract with the Wizards, Beal had a no-trade clause. The decision came down to the Suns or Heat before a move to the desert was chosen.

Beal had been linked to the Boston Celtics in the past, which could resurface this offseason.

In the Heat’s case, the front office is working with nearly $20 million before crossing the first apron threshold. They will heavily explore the veteran minimum market, along with having access to a $15.1 million mid-level exception, which could be used on a Beal signing.

Despite not being the star player he once was, the 14-year veteran can still be a contributor for championship contention. Beal has a career 37.6 three-point percentage and gives the Heat another ball handler/shot creator.

An option worth exploring.
