With millions in trade exceptions and a need for roster upgrades, Pat Riley could target Jonathan Kuminga to inject versatile athleticism into Miami Heat's rotation.

MIAMI, Fla. – Despite no legitimate indications that a Giannis Antetokounmpo trade is coming close, the Miami Heat still need to upgrade the roster to compete among the Eastern Conference’s best, including the reigning champion New York Knicks. Although the organization has no cap space, it’s roughly $41 million below the first apron – providing enough flexibility to get business done.

Plus, the Heat have slightly over $22.45 million worth of exceptions:

- $16.83 million from the Duncan Robinson sign-and-trade with the Detroit Pistons (July 7 deadline)

- $5.6 million from trading Haywood Highsmith to the Brooklyn Nets (Aug. 15 deadline)

It’s an additional route for the front office to sign players, which can be split but not combined.

The Heat could attract high-market free agents, especially with the financial flexibility, such as Jonathan Kuminga. After spending five years with the Golden State Warriors, he was traded to the Atlanta Hawks ahead of this past regular season’s deadline.

It appeared to be a mismanaged situation in the Bay Area. Kuminga was a potential cornerstone franchise player, especially for the future, but there was a lack of eye-to-eye agreement with coach Steve Kerr. After moving to the Southeast, Kuminga averaged 12.3 points on 57.6 percent true shooting, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 16 games, including one start.

Before June 29, the Hawks must decide whether or not to pick the 23-year-old’s $24.3 million club option. Although the organization could decline and work towards a long-term deal, Hoops Hype senior insider Michael Scotto reports that they’re expected to explore Kuminga’s value on the trade market. However, a return to Atlanta remains a “real possibility.”

Kuminga is a versatile, athletic forward who can score on all three levels, but still has room to grow defensively. He’s listed at 6-7, 225 pounds, with a 6-11 wingspan.

If the Hawks were to pick up the club option and seek a trade, the Heat can offer Nikola Jovic, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and draft capital. However, the package comes down to whether or not Antetokounmpo is dealt to South Florida.

Kuminga has averaged double-digit scoring over the last three seasons, including in split tenures with the Warriors and Hawks. He has a higher ceiling compared to the other Heat’s younger players.

In an offseason where changes are desperately needed, Team President Pat Riley and the rest of the front office need to explore the market to upgrade the roster.
