After trading for Giannis Antetokounmpo, Miami faces long-term depth concerns. Targeting breakout Pelicans star Trey Murphy III could rejuvenate a veteran roster while shipping out Andrew Wiggins’ massive contract if things go awry.

The Miami Heat had a big offseason, adding Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. However, as part of that trade, the Heat parted with four players and also lost All-Star guard Norman Powell to the Chicago Bulls in free agency. Despite making the big franchise-swinging move by getting Antetokounmpo, there have been concerns about the team's lack of depth. The Heat made a lot of stop-gap veteran moves to fill holes on the bench for the upcoming season but there is a name beginning to float around in trade rumors who would be a strong acquisition for Miami.

Trey Murphy, 26, could be an interesting name for the Heat to monitor if he becomes available via trade by the New Orleans Pelicans and it is becoming more likely that he does. Murphy may be one of the most interesting players potentially available in trade discussions around Feburary's trade deadline. The 2021 first-round pick has blossomed into a legitimate star. He broke out over the last two seasons, averaging career-highs in points, rebounds and assists in an increased role for one of the worst teams in the Western Conference.

Andrew Wiggins recently opted into the final year of his contract and signed a two-year, $34 million extension with the Heat, essentially making it a three-year, $64 million contract. Even though that seems like the team is tied to him for at least the next couple of seasons, the opportunity to add a younger forward is certainly there.

Murphy has proven he can score at a solid rate. The only unknown at this point is how much New Orleans values him. There have been many different reports throughout this offseason claiming they want multiple first-round picks in return but who knows? Murphy is under contract through 2028-29 and it would make sense for the Pelicans to value him highly.

A trade for Murphy would most likely include Wiggins and a pick or two and that may seem like a lot of outgoing value but if the Heat want to get younger following an offseason of adding a bunch of veterans, this is definitely a route to consider. With the Pelicans being a perennial bottom-feeder of the Western Conference, the front office will decide at one point to sell their stars. That would also include Zion Williamson, a former No. 1 overall pick, who has been floated in trade discussions over the past few seasons as well.
