As Boston emerges as a legitimate threat to hijack the Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes, the Miami Heat face a high-stakes battle to avoid repeating the Damian Lillard trade disaster.
MIAMI, Fla. – For most of the NBA Playoffs, it appeared that the Miami Heat were in prime position to land former Finals MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo in a trade. It’s likely that All-Star Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, the No. 13 pick, along with other players and draft capital, will be included in any potential deal. The Heat are likely the most desperate team in the Eastern Conference to land a superstar, but when someone of Giannis’ caliber becomes available, there will be other suitors lined up.
Although it has already circulated, reports strongly suggest that the Boston Celtics are a legitimate threat to lure the 10-time All-Star away from South Florida. Any potential deal would likely require a third team, which would be Jaylen Brown’s new home. According to the Stein Line, the Atlanta Hawks, Houston Rockets, and Portland Trail Blazers are potential landing destinations for the former Finals MVP.
The Celtics are coming off a 56-26 season, the second-best record in the Eastern Conference. Despite being without five-time All-NBA forward Jayson Tatum for the majority of the season, it presented an opportunity for Brown to be the go-to option. He averaged 28.7 points on a 57.3 true shooting percentage, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists in 71 games started.
For local South Florida fans, this might sound too familiar. A superstar is on the trade block, the Heat are constantly labeled as frontrunners, only for another organization to swoop in and take the prize. In the summer of 2023, seven-time All-NBA guard Damian Lillard reportedly requested a trade from the Portland Trail Blazers after 11 years with the franchise. The Heat were listed as the primary destination until the Milwaukee Bucks came out of nowhere and acquired him.
If Antetokounmpo gets traded anywhere else, Pat Riley and the rest of the front office will likely be viewed as failures before the 2026-27 season begins. The Heat clearly need star power to compete among the best in the Eastern Conference. Coming off a 43-39 season, including a fourth consecutive Play-In Tournament appearance, it’s clear that the current roster doesn’t have enough to compete for a championship.
According to FiveReasonsSports, the Heat’s No. 13 pick in the upcoming draft is intriguing to the Bucks. The Celtics don’t have a lottery pick to offer outright.
Antetokounmpo will likely have a strong voice in where he goes next, if a trade is close to completion. However, the Heat need to continue making a push, or there will be early disappointment among the fanbase.
