Ryan Conwell’s offensive aggression and Trevor Keels’ physical play highlight a dramatic double-overtime thriller as the Los Angeles Lakers erases a 16-point deficit to stun the Miami Heat's developmental roster.
MIAMI, Fla. – Coming off a clutch 88-87 win against the San Antonio Spurs on Friday, the Miami Heat were looking to stay in the win column in the California Classic Summer League. Second-round rookie Ryan Conwell made a strong impression with 21 points, including three three-pointers made. Another opportunity for the former Louisville guard to shine; meanwhile, others battle for a roster spot in the league.
Despite trailing 90 percent of the game – facing a 16-point deficit – the Los Angeles Lakers managed to crawl back and forced double overtime to secure a 93-91 victory.
Takeaways:
Conwell’s confidence continues to be on display. He started the game with a wing three-pointer. However, the rest of the game was marked by inconsistent shot-making. Conwell finished with 16 points on 33.3 percent shooting (6-18), seven rebounds, three assists, and a steal.
The 22-year-old isn’t afraid to let the basketball fly, even when it’s not going through the hoop. Conwell shot 16.7 percent (2-12) from behind the arc. It’s bright to see a rookie not falter from great confidence. An aspect that could become very valuable for a rookie throughout an 82-game season.
Conwell likely won’t be a high-volume shooter with the main roster, given all the veterans surrounding him, but the willingness to stay engaged offensively – when it’s a sluggish night – shows a level of mental strength.
Vladislav Goldin might have a long way to go before the Heat can consider him a legitimate league backup center. In the Summer League, it takes 10 personal fouls for a player to be disqualified. The Russian native finished with nine. Goldin had six points on 33.3 percent shooting, six rebounds, and four blocks.
The 25-year-old missed a few contested looks at the rim, but that needs to improve for him to reach the next level.
Trevor Keels continues to shine to start the Summer League. He finished with 16 points on 33.3 percent shooting, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Although the offense was inefficient, Keels finished a couple of plays through contact. He’s making a case to sign a two-way contract.
Lakers first-round selection Cameron Carr finished with a stunning performance: game-high 26 points on 43.8 percent shooting, eight rebounds, and an assist. He played a key role in the team’s comeback.
The Heat will conclude the California Classic against the Golden State Warriors on Monday before flying to Las Vegas for the Summer League main event.
