Pundits claim the Miami Heat lack defensive teeth, yet the arrival of Giannis Antetokounmpo alongside Bam Adebayo creates a versatile, elite frontline ready to silence the doubters this 2026-27 NBA season.

MIAMI, Fla. – The Miami Heat have continuously been at the center of ridiculous basketball propaganda this summer, but this last one might just take the cake.

First, it was not having enough assets to get 10-time All-Star Giannis Antetokounmpo; then it was giving up too much, lacking depth, and no shooting; but now, the memo is that the team has no defenders. The claim was famously made by Bill Simmons on his podcast with former ESPN analyst Zach Lowe. Afterwards, three-time NBA Champion Danny Green took the same route on the Gil Arenas Show.

The Heat are a defense-first franchise; it’s been that way since President Pat Riley first arrived in South Florida as the team’s new head coach in 1995. Four decades later, the standard still stands tall. Ahead of the 2026-27 season, the Heat have 12 All-Defensive selections. It’s mostly made up of Antetokounmpo (five) and Bam Adebayo (six).

After officially joining forces this summer, the new star duo is expected to form one of the best paint/rim defenses in the league. Antetokounmpo and Adebayo can guard all five positions on all three levels of the court.

Klay Thompson is the only other player on the Heat’s roster to make an All-Defensive team. Although the four-time NBA Champion isn’t in his prime anymore, he’s still not someone opponents will hunt. Regardless, whatever defense Thompson lacks, the 36-year-old can make up for in three-pointers made.

Davion Mitchell and Pelle Larsson are pesky defensive guards who aren’t light matchups. Bobby Portis Jr. has a reputation for being an intense defender and Nick Richards can develop into a consistent shot blocker behind Adebayo.

The Heat have a plethora of high-quality defenders, but media personnel and former players seem to overlook it. The team should be one of the best defensive units in the league this upcoming season. Even with lesser talent over the last six years, the Heat still prioritized the defensive aspect of basketball over everything else.

Head coach Erik Spoelstra is regarded as one of the best minds in the league. As training camp is scheduled from next Tuesday to Friday at Florida Atlantic University, the Heat announced on Thursday, he will have clarity on which lineups work best and experiment with other ideas.

Defense should be the last question surrounding the organization. The Heat have all the pieces to give opponents a hard time scoring. Whether it’s the perimeter or the rim, someone will be there to get a stop.
