As Philadelphia builds a powerhouse around Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown, the Miami Heat face stiff competition to reunite with the league’s all-time leading scorer.

MIAMI, Fla. – Nine full days have passed since NBA free agency opened and LeBron James is still available. After informing the Los Angeles Lakers he would not return, several suitors have lined up for the league’s all-time leading scorer. However, only a few can legitimately make a case to sign him.

The Miami Heat are among the exclusive club, looking to add significant star power next to Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo. When James last played for the South Florida franchise, it became the beginning of an everlasting legacy. He won back-to-back NBA Championships in four consecutive Finals appearances.

Although it’s been 12 years since James departed, a reunion is in the cards this summer. However, a star duo might not be enough to lure him in. The Philadelphia 76ers are reportedly a serious landing destination for the 41-year-old. After securing former Finals MVP Jaylen Brown in a blockbuster trade – sending nine-time All-Star Paul George to the Boston Celtics – the City of Brotherly Love is a legitimate threat to the Heat’s plans for James.

Without giving up two-time All-Star Tyrese Maxey, former MVP Joel Embiid, or rising star V.J. Edgecombe, the Sixers already have the pieces to compete in the Eastern Conference.

President of Basketball Operations Mike Gansey and the front office added some high-quality players in free agency: Dean Wade, Ariel Hukporti, and Anfernee Simons. The bench production is projected to improve significantly.

Adding James to the mix will only make things easier on him. Being surrounded by outside shooters, plus Emiid’s paint presence, would allow the 23-year veteran to facilitate and not carry a heavy workload.

James was linked to the Sixers as a free agent in 2018 – before signing with the Lakers. Although several changes have been made since then, including the departure of three-time All-Star Ben Simmons, the organization has remained competitive.

It’s been 25 years since Philadelphia last saw the Eastern Conference Finals – Hall of Famers Allen Iverson and Dikembe Mutombo were still actively playing. Given the latest transactions, James’ addition could be the piece that gets the team over the hump.

The Heat still have three roster spots to fill this offseason. Filling a couple with extra reinforcements could be the difference in James deciding between a reunion and signing with a completely new team.

It’s uncertain how soon a decision will be made, but it could be the most important ahead of retirement.
