As the Celtics weigh a blockbuster trade for the Greek Freak, Pat Riley readies a heavy-hitting package of young talent to secure the Miami Heat's long-awaited superstar.
MIAMI, Fla. – In the last few days, there have been reports and rumors circulating about former Finals MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo getting traded to the Boston Celtics. The historic 18-time champion franchise went 56-26 during the regular season – which was a surprise by many metrics – but fell in the first round of the playoffs after seven games against the Philadelphia 76ers. Despite having a 3-1 lead, it proved to be worthless.
Five-time All-NBA forward Jayson Tatum made a historic comeback from an Achilles injury. He averaged 21.8 points on 54.1 percent true shooting, 10 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.4 steals in 16 games. Despite taking a backseat to co-star Jaylen Brown, the 28-year-old defied all the odds and made an impact.
However, the Celtics could be looking for Tatum to return to superstar form. President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens and the rest of the organization are still chasing championships. After winning most recently in 2024, the next one could require a significant sacrifice.
Brown is coming off an MVP-caliber season: 28.7 points on 57.3 percent true shooting, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists in 71 games, all starts. He would certainly be an equalizer in a potential deal for Antetokounmpo, which would put the Heat’s hopes at risk. However, insider information might beg to differ.
According to The Stein Line, the Heat still have momentum in the sweepstakes. A package constructed around All-Star guard Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, and Sixth Man of the Year runner-up Jaime Jaquez Jr. The No. 13 pick in the upcoming NBA Draft will be included.
Regardless of who’s interested in the 10-time All-Star, it appears more than likely that Antetokounmpo’s 13-year tenure with the Milwaukee Bucks is coming to an end. He delivered the franchise its first championship since 1971 in 2021.
Co-owner Jimmy Haslam made it clear that if a deal were agreed upon, it would be ahead of the Draft, which takes place on June 23rd and 24th – next week from today.
The Heat are in desperate need of a superstar coming off a fourth consecutive Play-In Tournament appearance. If they miss out on another superstar of Antetokounmpo’s caliber, it will be difficult to make up for it. Plus, it places a question mark on the leadership within the organization and the direction of the franchise.
It’s Antetokounmpo-or-bust as the offseason officially unravels – the Draft approaching, followed by free agency.
