Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro reverted to last season's All-Star form Friday against the Charlotte Hornets.
He had 33 points and nine assists in the Heat's 128-120 victory at Spectrum Center. The win ended the Hornets' six-game winning streak.
Herro made eight 3-pointers and also had nine rebounds. The only players in Heat history with more 30, five and five performances are LeBron James, Jimmy Butler and Dwyane Wade.
"He was sensational," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "You can see that Tyler is finding more and more rhythm as the games go on. Tonight, the three-point shot went in for him. That opens up a ton of things in his game. He can attack with the ball in his hands. And his nine rebounds, we needed those, because they’re very present on the glass."
The performance should give Herro lift in what has been an injury-filled season. He's missed time with multiple injuries but is starting to once again play like an All-Star. The Hornets, who were among the hottest teams in the league, had no answer for him. It was the Herro of old, resembling the player who was selected for the All-Star game a year ago.
"I feel like (Tyler Herro) was just out there doing whatever he wants," Hornets star Brandon Miller said. "So long as we play with that mindset of just not letting everybody come in here and being comfortable, we should win every home game in Spectrum."
The win improved the Heat to 35-27, keeping them in the No. 7 seed. They are trying to avoid playing in the Play-In Tournament, which they have failed to in recent years. Herro said the team is already in a playoff mindset.
"It felt like we were in the playoffs," Herro said. "This is a big win for us."
The Heat are now tied with the Orlando Magic for the seventh spot. They are just one game back of the Toronto Raptors. The Heat return to action tomorrow against the Eastern Conference-leading Detroit Pistons. A win could build even more momentum for Miami.
