As free agency heats up, a legendary reunion in South Beach could fix the Miami Heat's backcourt depth while offering the league's all-time leading scorer a final title run.

MIAMI, Fla. – On the second day of NBA free agency, LeBron James remains on the open market. The 41-year-old is set to return for next season, but not with the Los Angeles Lakers. According to ESPN insider Shams Charania, the decision was “happiness-led.” The Miami Heat are among realistic suitors for the league’s all-time leading scorer.

James has yet to show any sign of decline – averaging 20.9 points on 51.5 percent shooting, 6.1 rebounds, 7.2 assists, and 1.2 steals in 60 games (all starts) last season. Although a decision hasn’t been made, signs should point to him reuniting with Team President Pat Riley in South Florida.

As currently constructed, the Heat don’t have a natural point guard – Davion Mitchell and Dru Smith projected in that role. Despite primarily being a forward, James can operate as a facilitator. In the 2019-20 season, he led the league with a 10.2 assist average and wound up winning the championship.

James is known to have a high basketball IQ – in some cases, knowing what play the opposing team is going to run too. In the same year he ran point, the Lakers went with a double-big lineup of Anthony Davis and JaVale McGee/Dwight Howard.

The Heat have the components to do the same, but the need for outside shooting is still big. As of late, the organization drafted Ryan Conwell in the second round, re-signed Simone Fontecchio, and signed Tim Hardaway Jr. in free agency. Presumably, with 12 standard roster spots filled and roughly $11 million of space before crossing the first apron, the Heat can search for more outside shooting on the veteran minimum market.

In the following six years since winning the 2020 championship, the Lakers kept going away from what delivered the Larry O’Brien – James never played point again in the purple and gold.

However, it’s a role the megastar can easily be inserted into on the Heat roster and thrive.

Despite heading toward financial restrictions, James could take a pay cut to contend for another championship with the franchise. Even with a rough past with Riley, Miami Herald Sports Columnist Barry Jackson reported the relationship between them has been repaired.

Although it never seemed like James would wear a Heat jersey again, a reunion is closer than ever before.

The Warriors haven’t been serious contenders since winning the championship in 2022 and the Cavaliers have struggled in the postseason. South Florida could be viewed as the best option for James.
