The Miami Heat are coming off an incredible win over the Charlotte Hornets last night, in their first matchup for the In-Season Tournament Cup, with a final score of 126-108. They had great contributions from multiple players, including a couple of youthful players.
Jaime Jaquez Jr. finished with 18 points, eight rebounds, nine assists, and two blocks in 33 minutes.
Pelle Larsson followed up with 19 points, four rebounds, two assists, and a steal in 27 minutes. There's been a new surge from the second-year guard since being inserted into the starting lineup.
Erik Spoelstra began to shift towards the 24-year-old over Kel'el Ware in last week's matchup against the Hornets. Larsson has started every game since then, and is averaging 11.8 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.3 assists while shooting 56.8 percent from the field, 33.3 percent from three-point range. Even though his final numbers may fluctuate game by game, he finds a way to impact winning.
In Monday night's game against the Los Angeles Clippers, Larsson finished with seven points, a rebound, and three assists, but had three steals in the third quarter, which elevated the Heat after a rough second quarter.
During the offseason, it became clear that the Heat were focusing on the development of its younger players.
There were expectations for Jaquez Jr., Ware, and Nikola Jovic, especially after signing his $62.4 million rookie contract, to take a big leap.
However, Larsson didn't appear to be in the mix. He also partook in the EuroBasket tournament this summer with Team Sweden and averaged 18.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.2 steals, and shot 45.5 percent from the field, but struggled from behind the arc, 25.8 percent.
Larsson has taken a massive jump from his rookie season and could be in the running for Most Improved Player if his current trajectory continues to play out. When asked after last night's game about the difference in roles as a starter and reserve, he doesn't see a big difference.
"I'm just playing more minutes," he said. "Getting more opportunities and show what I can do."
Larsson has been a great spark for the Heat on both sides of the court, even with the Heat's newly fast-paced offense. He's a plus-four in the plus/minus stats category as a starter.
The Heat does an amazing job at scouting overlooked talent. Larsson was a second-round pick.
After a glorious victory last night, the team will have another game tonight against the Portland Trail Blazers at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Jaquez was diagnosed with a left ankle sprain after the Hornets game, which could result in extra opportunities for Larsson.
