The Charlotte Hornets’ win in Cleveland wasn’t just another surprising result on the schedule — it felt like yet another genuine moment of growth for a young team learning how to close games the right way.
For the second straight game, Charlotte found itself playing into the final seconds against a quality opponent. The difference this time was how the Hornets responded when the pressure peaked.
Charlotte has had so many "growing pain" moments this year where they show they're right there at times, but then don't finish. That was the case on Friday night against Chicago.
The Hornets took it to the final seconds, but an overturned foul call on Kon Knueppel, that would have likely tied the game, ended up being Charlotte's undoing.
Against Cleveland yesterday, in a very similar situation, Charlotte came through.
Trailing late in regulation, Charlotte didn’t rush, didn’t panic, and didn’t settle. Instead, the ball found Brandon Miller, who shook his defender off and calmly buried a clutch three-pointer to tie the game and force overtime, silencing the Cleveland crowd and changing the tone of the night.
Once the extra period began, Charlotte took control. The Hornets executed with purpose, defended with physicality, and looked like the more composed team. They completely shut out Cleveland in overtime.
This was a win built on discipline which is exactly Charles Lee's vision. "To have a scoreless shutout in OT with Garland on the court, with Mitchell on the court, Hunter and all those guys that usually do such a great job of creating. I loved it.", he said in his postgame interview on the FanDuel Sports Network.
The Hornets also did this with Lamelo Ball, Tre Mann, and Collin Sexton still out. Charles Lee said after the game that they would be evaluated when they got back home to Charlotte.
