On a night filled with nostalgia, celebration, and purple pride, the Charlotte Hornets honored one of their most beloved figures while delivering a statement victory. Dell Curry’s No. 30 jersey was officially retired and raised to the rafters at Spectrum Center during halftime of Thursday’s game against the Orlando Magic. The Hornets responded with a resounding 130-111 blowout win, improving to 36-34 on the season.
The evening was everything a franchise legend could hope for. Dell Curry, who spent 10 of his 16 NBA seasons in Charlotte and ranks as the franchise’s all-time leader in games played (701), points (9,839), and three-pointers made (929) when he left in 1998, fought back tears as his number was lifted. The 1994 Sixth Man of the Year and longtime team broadcaster was joined by family, including sons Stephen and Seth Curry, who made the trip to witness the moment.
Dell was also surprised with North Carolina’s highest civilian honor, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, earlier in the evening. The Spectrum Center was electric with a seventh straight sellout crowd chanting his name.
The Magic jumped out to early leads of eight points twice in the first quarter, but the Hornets seized control late in the period. They then exploded for back-to-back 38-point quarters in the second and third, building a massive lead that reached 30 points.
Coby White came off the bench to lead all scorers with 27 points, knocking down five threes. Brandon Miller added 25 points and eight assists, while LaMelo Ball contributed 20 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals. As a team, Charlotte drilled 21 three-pointers on red-hot shooting, overwhelming Orlando’s vaunted defense and turning the game into a highlight reel.
The win was a fitting tribute to Curry’s sharpshooting legacy that defined the original Hornets era. After the ceremony, the Hornets played with visible joy and energy, turning what could have been a sentimental night into a dominant performance that had fans on their feet all game long.
For Dell Curry, the night capped decades of dedication to the Hornets organization as player, broadcaster, and ambassador. During his speech he talked about how the way the Hornets were now going about things as a team and an organization was going to lead Charlotte to being the premiere team in the NBA.
“We're just getting started” Dell Curry said as Spectrum Center erupted. The jersey now hangs alongside Bobby Phills’ No. 13 as only the second retired number in franchise history.
In a season where playoff positioning remains tantalizingly within reach, the Hornets gave their fans — and their legend — the perfect memory: a celebration of the past and a hopeful step toward the future.
Dell Curry’s No. 30 will forever soar above the court where he once lit it up, and on this night, the team made sure his legacy shone as brightly as ever.
