The Charlotte Hornets acquired Coby White from the Chicago Bulls at the trade deadline and the UNC product is excited to play for the red-hot club.
White sent a message to Hornets fans after the trade with the Bulls went through.
White is in the final year of his contract. He becomes an unrestricted free agent this offseason. The scoring guard is averaging 18.6 points, 3.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game this season while shooting 43.8% from the field, 34.6% from beyond the arc and 80.5% from the free-throw line.
“[Coby’s] a guy that plays the game with joy [and] with passion,” said Hornets President of Basketball Operations Jeff Peterson. “He's a winner. He loves to compete and as you can see, that's what we want to be about here. Continue to add guys who compete on both sides of the ball. He's a dynamic shooter [and] his offensive skill set is high-level. He can really stretch the floor with his shooting, especially shooting off the dribble. He makes it very tough for defenders to guard him. They have to switch up their coverages on him. I think he's an underrated passer and, again, just his overall competitive makeup. Any time we can bolster the roster with talent, I'm going to be strategic and do that.”
White has career averages of 15.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. He scored a career-high 44 points against the Orlando Magic last season.
“Throughout the whole season we have guys that we target, who our scouts are constantly watching, and analytics are doing due diligence on, as well,” explained Peterson. “Coby's a guy that popped up on that list continuously. So, just being able to add a guy like that is very exciting and being able to acquire his Bird rights is very, very important for us in terms of how we're operating and how we’re building. Coby fits everything that we want to be about, and we hope that he's a Hornet for a very long time.”
