Charles Lee discussed his plans for the Hornets' identity entering the new NBA season.

The Charlotte Hornets will enter into the new 2026-27 NBA season with a lot to prove after a bust offseason.

Charlotte has taken a new approach to the roster, going with a youth movement, sending star guard LaMelo Ball to the Minnesota Timberwolves. With this, the team will now be kicking off a new era of basketball, with the current players ready to earn their keep in the Eastern Conference.

The Hornets were one of the better teams offensively last season, and this should remain the same in 2026-27. Charlotte ranked fifth overall in offensive rating, coming in at 119.4 points per 100 possessions.

But the defense was ranked 12th, and the organization has tried to make strides to improve this over the offseason. Hornets head coach Charles Lee said that the goal of the team this year is to build an identity on defense, becoming one of the best teams in the league on that side of the floor.

Lee wants to see his guys competing on the defensive side of everything, giving themselves a better chance to win games. If Charlotte is able to put together quality play on both sides of the ball, the playoffs could well be within their reach.

Adding players such as center Naz Reid and forward Royce O'Neale should help out this team greatly, with each guy being able to perform well on defense. Charlotte also added guard Grayson Allen, who has shown to be a good defender at times during his NBA career so far.

Reid alone should be able to help with the defense inside, with him being one of the better defenders in the game. Charlotte targeted Reid from Minnesota in the trade that sent Ball out of town, and he will now be given a larger role this season.

The switchability of the Hornets will be one of the biggest aspects of improvement for this team, offering them a chance to do damage on the defensive side of the ball. The front office wanted to bring in players who could make a direct impact, and at least on paper, Charlotte's roster looked much stronger.

If the team can play up to the level that Lee wants them to, it could be a very fun season for the Hornets in the East, even with teams improving. But only time will tell about this team, and they will have to stay consistent on both ends over the long regular season.
