Coby White will be the starting PG for the Charlotte Hornets next season.
The Charlotte Hornets made it a "priority" to re-sign Coby White this summer.
White and Charlotte agreed to a three-year, $74 million contract this offseason. The UNC product will start at point guard next season since LaMelo Ball was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
"He was always a priority to bring back," Hornets president of basketball operations and general manager Jeff Peterson told Marc J. Spears of Andscape. "He wasn’t a rental. So, we would bring Coby back with LaMelo, without LaMelo. And he was always someone who is just a winner and does the right thing. So, of course, it’s a luxury to have him in that situation. And we were fortunate that he ultimately ended up choosing us, because he could have went anywhere as a free agent. But no, they were independent of each other."
The Hornets acquired White from the Chicago Bulls in February. In 21 games with Charlotte, White played well. He averaged 15.6 points per game while shooting 46.1% from the field, 39.1% from beyond the arc and 83.9% from the foul line.
Charlotte beat the Miami Heat in the first play-in game but lost to the Orlando Magic in the second one. As a result, the Hornets missed the playoffs again.
White finished the 2025-26 season averaging 17.4 points per game with the Bulls and Hornets. Chicago drafted White with the seventh overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. White has career averages of 15.4 points per game.
The Hornets haven't made the playoffs since 2016, but they have a bright future with Brandon Miller, Kon Knueppel, White, Naz Reid and Moussa Diabaté leading the way.
In this year's draft, Charlotte selected Hannes Steinbach from Washington with the 14th overall pick and Texas Tech's Christian Anderson Jr. with the 18th overall pick. Both players are talented.
It has been an active offseason for the Hornets, who dealt Ball and Josh Green to the Timberwolves for Reid, a 2033 unprotected first-round pick, three future first-round pick swaps and three future second-round picks.
Charlotte then traded Miles Bridges, a 2029 first-round pick and a 2027 second-round pick to the Phoenix Suns for Grayson Allen, Royce O'Neale and a 2033 first-round pick.
The Hornets are expected to start White, Miller, Knueppel, Reid and Diabaté next season. That's a strong starting five on paper.
