An NBA analyst shared a reason why the Charlotte Hornets traded away LaMelo Ball.

The Charlotte Hornets made a blockbuster trade after the NBA Draft, sending star guard LaMelo Ball and Josh Green to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Naz Reid, a 2033 unprotected first-round pick, three first-round pick swaps, and three second-round picks.

It was an unexpected trade, as Ball led the Hornets to a 44-38 record, narrowly missing the playoffs after losing in the second Play-In Game to the Orlando Magic.

In that Play-In Game, Ball finished with 23 points, two rebounds, five assists, and three turnovers, shooting 7-17 from the field.

Following Charlotte's move to send Ball to the Timberwolves, NBA analyst Zach Lowe weighed in on the trade.

"I think it really comes down to a physical toughness question that they have about LaMelo Ball," Lowe said.

"You watch these playoff series, Oklahoma City-San Antonio, San Antonio-New York, and you just envision, like, 'This is a dude, a front runner is too strong of a term, fast and loose. When the game's fun, that's when he's at his best.' What are you gonna do in Game 5 of a playoff series when Stephon Castle has been in your jersey for five straight games? When you're switching between Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace and Alex Caruso bumping you, physically just manhandling you up and down the court? Are you actually game for that?"

It's unclear how Ball would've performed at the playoff level, as he never made it there during his time in Charlotte. The closet Ball got was the Play-In Tournament, where he played in four games, averaging 23.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, 6.7 assists, and 3.2 turnovers per game, shooting 30.4 percent from the floor and 31.8 percent from deep.

"Because if you're gonna be a serious team, that's what you gotta be game for. And I think this trade says, 'Yes, there are these ancillary salary and pick benefits and faith in Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel and all that... the Hornets know the numbers. They know their offense wasn't good when LaMelo was on the bench. They know all of that stuff, and they decided anyway, 'We just don't think we can win the biggest games with this guy on our team.' I think that's really what it boils down to."

While Ball became an All-Star with the Hornets, it's clear they didn't trust him to lead them into the postseason and are shifting to building around Kon Knueppel and Brandon Miller.

Charlotte has already made some major moves, but they will need to do more as they look to end their playoff drought with a postseason appearance in the 2026-27 season.
